UNLV keeps the pineapple, and Hawai’i never once reached the end zone

The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors ran 76 plays, held the ball for 32 minutes, moved the chains 20 times and scored six points. That is the whole night in one sentence. UNLV won 21-6 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu on Saturday, and the Rebels did it without a passing touchdown, without a turnover, and without ever letting Micah Alejado get his offense across the goal line. Jai’Den Thomas carried 20 times for 143 yards. Jackson Arnold ran for 89 more and scored twice. The Island Showdown Trophy, a gold pineapple, goes back to Las Vegas for a fourth straight year.

Both teams opened like there was a sick-ass boat party Friday night. Matt Choules punted after three plays. Gehrig Heil punted after three plays. Then UNLV found the thing that worked all night and never really stopped going back to it.

Eight plays, 80 yards, 3:06 off the clock. Jet Thomas ripped 11 up the left side on the first snap, a pass interference call on Jaylon Edmond moved it another 15, and Arnold hit Keyan Burnett over the middle for 25 down to the Hawai’i 29. From there it was quarterback runs and downhill blocking. Arnold pulled it for 12 to the 7 and then walked in untouched from the 7 at 9:33, behind the same line that got mushed into the backfield six times a week ago against Memphis. Ramon Villela kicked the point. 7-0.

Hawai’i answered with six plays and seven yards. The Rebels then put together the most annoying possession of the night: 10 plays, 40 yards, 4:17 off the clock, and two straight incompletions from the Hawai’i 33 to hand it back on downs. Jaylon Glover had carried four times for 14 inside that drive. Rebs were up 7-0, but already leaving points on the grass.

Second Quarter

Sean Olvera-Harle cashed in the drive that carried over from the first quarter with a 39-yarder at 14:09 after the Rainbow Warriors reached the UNLV 21 and ended the drive on three straight incompletions. 7-3. Then, for about 10 minutes, nobody did jack Sh*t

UNLV went three-and-out. Hawai’i drove 35 yards out of its own 5 and punted after Tre Fulton dropped Micah Alejado for an eight-yard sack. Thomas broke a 21-yarder on the next series, and it led nowhere. DeVon Rice put the ball on the ground at the Hawai’i 20 and recovered his own fumble, which would have been a real disaster had he not.

Then the two-minute drill, and this is where the Rebels actually looked like the offense Las Vegas has been waiting to see. Eight plays, 74 yards, 2:19. Thomas carried three times to get UNLV off its own goal line, Arnold pulled it for eight on the next snap to reach midfield, and then he stood in the pocket and threw the best ball of his night, 44 yards down the left sideline to Kayden McGee at the Hawai’i 8. Two plays later, Jackson Arnold scored from the 2 at 1:33. 14-3 at the break.

Third Quarter

Hawai’i took the second-half kickoff, moved the ball a lot, and got absolutely nothing for it. Fourteen plays, 52 yards, 5:31 off the clock. A roughing the passer call on Mumu Bin-Wahad gifted the Rainbow Warriors 15 more down to the UNLV 16. Then two incompletions from backup Bjorn Jurgensen, an eight-yard sack by Elias Rudolph, and Olvera-Harle pushed a 41-yarder wide. Zero points again.

The Rebels answered with three plays and a punt, and the series was a penalty clinic: a pass interference flag in their favor, a holding call that wiped out an eight-yard run by Jai’Den Thomas, and offsetting fouls on the snap after that. Dan Mullen said afterward that he was disappointed in the offensive coaching, and this is the stretch he was talking about.

Hawai’i went 74 yards on 14 more plays, took six and a half minutes doing it, and got three points. Kal-El Togafau sacked Alejado for two. A targeting foul on Landyn Cleveland, upheld on review, handed Hawai’i the ball at the UNLV 9. Togafau then came right back with a six-yard sack on the very next snap, and after two more incompletions, Olvera-Harle kicked a 33-yarder with 1:32 left. 14-6. Twenty-eight snaps in the quarter, with two field goal tries to show for it.

Fourth Quarter

The game ended on a goal-line stand that did not happen anywhere near the goal line. Hawai’i opened the quarter with Rice up the middle for 16, Sitani Mikaele pounding it down to the UNLV 12, and a fourth-and-1 handoff to Mikaele from the 10 that Lucas Conti and Kamuela Ka’aihue met in the hole for a one-yard loss. Turnover on downs at 9:53. Eleven plays, 53 yards, no points, and the Rainbow Warriors were finished.

UNLV punted it right back. Hawai’i lost seven yards on three snaps, the last of them a Kenji Scanlan sack, and Heil kicked it out of bounds at midfield. First play from the 50: Jet up the middle, one cut, 50 yards, nobody within 10 of him at 4:51. 21-6.

Quandarius Keyes put the bow on it, picking Alejado off at the UNLV 29 with 3:42 to play. From there, the Rebels just leaned on people. Thomas got it five more times, Arnold scrambled 17 to midfield, Hawai’i burned every timeout it had left, and Arnold knelt on it. Ten carries for 99 yards after halftime for Thomas, right around 10 a pop, and a defense that made Micah Alejado throw it 41 times to go nowhere.

Bottom Line

Five sacks for 28 yards. Seven tackles for loss. One sack allowed on 61 plays. That is the game right there.

The defensive front was the difference. Togafau had two sacks and two tackles for loss. Fulton led everybody on the field with 12 tackles, eight of them solo, plus a sack, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble. Ka’aihue, a Hawai’i kid playing 20 minutes from where he grew up, added nine. Alejado threw it 41 times for 176 yards, 4.3 per attempt, and Hawai’i averaged 3.6 on the ground. Twenty first downs and 294 total yards turned into two field goals.

Mullen was blunt about the other side of the ball. “We have to play better, especially offensively. We have to coach guys better,” he said. “I’m disappointed a little bit more offensively with the coaching, which a lot of that is on me.” He is right. UNLV went 7-of-15 on third down, 0-for-2 on fourth, punted six times, and threw for 116 yards.

The run game, though, is real, and the offensive line got fixed in a week. Six sacks allowed against Memphis in the opener. One here, without starting center Austin Boyd, who sat with an ankle injury. Jai’Den Thomas got 20 carries for the first time under Mullen and turned it into the 10th 100-yard game of his career. Arnold threw for 291 yards against Memphis and lost. He threw for 116 here, ran for 89, and won. I’ll take that trade every week.

UNLV is 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain West with the pineapple back in the case, and it has now won two in a row in Honolulu. Timmy Chang and Hawai’i are 0-2 with an offense that can get to the 10 and not one yard further. North Texas is next, on the road, Saturday afternoon.

Post-Game

“A gutsy win by our team. We made plays that we needed to at the end,” Mullen said.

On the defense, which gave up yards all night and never gave up the end zone: “Really huge. We bent a lot but we never broke, right? We made the plays we needed to make to get off the field. That’s two years in a row we’ve had a great defensive plan against this team. That’s a very good football team. A very explosive offense.”

On the pressure that broke Alejado: “We got after him a little bit. He missed a couple throws in the first half that he’ll be disappointed with. He got hot in the second half a little bit, which you know they’re going to keep throwing it and throwing it. But we got enough pressure to make him inconsistent, especially in the last couple drives with some big sacks and the interception.”

On Thomas: “In the end, he pounded away, he’s your guy offensively. You know, he’s gonna run hard. He’s eventually gonna break one, which he did at the end.” On his quarterback: “Jackson Arnold ran tough tonight, physical guy. That is a tough, physical and gutsy win by the team.”

On the trophy: “I think our kids understand. There’s a lot of new kids playing in this game for the first time. But it’s great to win the pineapple. Two teams that get after each other and play really hard. It means a lot to the fans.”
