UNLV Rebels (3-2, 1-0 MW) | California Golden Bears (2-3)
The UNLV Rebels survived a wild second-half collapse and fourth-quarter scare Saturday, defeating the California Golden Bears 39-31 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Jackson Arnold was the driver for five touchdowns, throwing for three and running for two, as UNLV survived Cal‘s fourth-quarter comeback to secure the W.

UNLV Explodes for 24 Points in the First Half and Takes Control Behind Arnold’s Big-Play Ability Through the Air and Ground
Cal wasted little time to apply pressure on the Rebels.
Taimane Purcell opened the scoring with a 91-yard touchdown reception after a missed tackle in open field. The pass zipped from Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, giving the Golden Bears a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.
But UNLV answered almost immediately.
Arnold connected with Kayden “Big Play” McGee for a 70-yard touchdown, equalizing the game at 7-7 and giving the Rebs their first pivotal offensive spark of the afternoon.
From there, UNLV took over.

Arnold broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, putting the Rebels ahead for the first time. Ramon Villela then added a 31-yard field goal later in the quarter before Arnold found Taz Reddicks through the air for a 36-yard touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the half.
Just like that, UNLV turned a 7-0 deficit into a decisive 24-7 halftime lead.
The Rebels offense Saturday was built around explosive plays, and Arnold repeatedly found ways to create them with both his arm and his legs.
At halftime, UNLV looked to be in control.
Cal Turns the Game Upside Down in the Second Half and Storms Back to Take a Sudden Fourth-Quarter Lead
The game changed drastically after halftime.

Cal scored 11 unanswered points in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 24-18 heading into the final stretch. The Golden Bears found the end zone on a 53-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Jackson Brousseau to Carson Perry-Smith, then added on a field goal to keep the comeback alive.
The pressure was kept on into the fourth.
With 11:38 remaining, Ashten Emory scored on a seven-yard run, and Cal’s extra point put the Golden Bears ahead 25-24.
After leading by 17 points at halftime, UNLV quickly found itself trailing in the game and its momentum slipping away.
That is when Arnold delivered once more.
Arnold Answers Cal’s Rally With Two Fourth-Quarter Touchdowns to Put the Rebels Back in Control
With 9:31 remaining, Arnold found Keyan Burnett for a 10-yard touchdown to put UNLV back in front. Arnold then used those clutch legs and ran in the two-point conversion, giving the Rebels the lead, making it 32-25.
The Golden Bears had one more opportunity to charge and force a comeback, but Arnold and the Rebels offense read their bluff charge and put the game away.
With 3:25 remaining, Arnold kept the ball and barreled his way into the end zone from two yards out, giving UNLV a 39-25 cushion.

Cal answered and scored one more with 28 seconds remaining in the game when Brousseau connected with Ian Strong for a 10-yard touchdown. But the Golden Bears’ much-needed final onside kick attempt went straight to the Rebels’ hands team, allowing UNLV to close out the victory.
The comeback had been spectacular.
However, the finish belonged to the Rebels.
Arnold’s Five-Touchdown Performance Gives UNLV a Statement Win Over an ACC Opponent
The Rebels received a strong defensive performance from Mumu Bin-Wahad, who had a day with six total tackles and one of UNLV’s four sacks. Quandarius Keyes also added an interception, his second of the season.

UNLV’s defense ultimately bent but did not break despite Cal finishing with 464 total yards, including 395 through the air. The Rebels forced the Golden Bears to settle for several scoring opportunities and made enough plays late to protect the lead.
The victory moves UNLV to 3-2 overall and closes out its nonconference schedule. It also gives the Rebels another impressive result against a power conference opponent and a confidence boost going into one of their toughest tests of the season next Saturday. UNLV has now won seven of its last nine games against teams from power conferences going back to 2023.
For almost three quarters, UNLV looked like it was cruising toward a surefire victory.
Then Cal turned the game into a brawl.
But when the Rebels needed their quarterback most, Arnold delivered the biggest plays of the afternoon.
UNLV leaves Allegiant Stadium with more than just a nonconference victory. It leaves with a reminder that this team can overcome adversity, answer a major momentum swing and finish a game when everything is on the line. Now on to the undefeated Bison next Saturday, here in the Sin City.
Post-Game
Dan Mullen did not hide what the afternoon meant to his program. “A huge win by our guys,” Mullen said. “Obviously, a tremendous win by our guys,” he added later.

Arnold, who accounted for all five UNLV touchdowns, pointed to the stretch when the 24-7 lead disappeared. “When things go down like today in the game, we end up losing a lead after being up 24-7, you just got to move on to the next play,” Arnold said. “I think I’m more comfortable with the offense,” he said of his growth in the system.
Mullen has seen that growth up close. “When you watch what Jackson’s done early on, he did a really good job picking the system up and was very efficient in our first couple games,” Mullen said. “We know when to take the shots downfield. How do you use the offense to create the big plays? I think that’s where Jackson has grown.” He also credited his quarterback’s reads against pressure: “I think Jackson did an amazing job of understanding, when it’s man-to-man coverage, who’s got the quarterback man to man,” Mullen said.
The fourth-down stops mattered just as much. “You stop them on fourth down, that’s buying a possession. They stole some, we stole some, and those fourth down stops were huge,” Mullen said. “Those were huge,” he said. Bin-Wahad, who led the charge in the middle, said the staff handed him the keys. “Coach Mullen and [defensive coordinator Paul] Guenther gave me the ability to take charge of the defense. I don’t take it lightly,” Bin-Wahad said. (Quotes via The Sporting Tribune, SportsGrid and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.)
