www.FranchiseSportsMedia.com
UNLV Rebels (1-2, 1-0 MW) | North Texas Mean Green (1-1)
Four turnovers. Zero touchdowns. Triple-digit heat.
It was over 100 degrees at kickoff in Denton, TX, and the UNLV offense never got hot. The North Texas Mean Green beat the Rebels 44-6 at DATCU Stadium on Saturday, and the numbers are doo-doo-brown in every direction you look. Four turnovers. Zero touchdowns for the first time since September of 2021. A 36-game streak of scoring at least 20 points, the longest in the country, is gone. Jackson Arnold came home to Denton, got sacked four times, fumbled once, and ran 14 times for minus-11 yards. Tayven Jackson threw for 233 and two scores for North Texas, Jahiem White went for 124 on the ground, and Neal Brown got his first home win as the Mean Green coach without being challenged after the first quarter.
Game Summary: UNLV Rebels vs North Texas Mean Green
| TEAM | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Final |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UNLV | 0 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 6 |
| UNT | 13 | 7 | 14 | 10 | 44 |
First Quarter

UNLV opened with a three-and-out that lost seven yards and drew a delay-of-game flag. Matt Choules punted; Lathon Latiolais brought it back 11 yards to the UNLV 45, and North Texas was already in business. Jackson hit Corri Milliner for 26 on the first snap, White ran 11 more to the 8, and only a holding call kept it to a Dominic De Freitas 35-yard field goal. 3-0.
Then the turnovers started. Arnold picked up a first down to Taeshaun Lyons, and on the next snap Davion Rhodes came free, dropped him for a 15-yard loss, and stripped him. Justin Benton recovered at the UNLV 23. The defense held again, Jackson missed three throws inside the 10, and De Freitas hit from 27. 6-0.
Three plays later it happened again. Jaylon Glover ripped 11, Arnold hit Lyons for nine, and Glover got the ball punched out by Wesley Hudson at the UNLV 47. Zakye Barker fell on it. This time North Texas cashed it: 26 yards to Brec Long, then Jackson flipped a short one to White, who went 32 yards to the house at 3:51. 13-0. Three straight Mean Green possessions starting on the UNLV side of midfield, 13 points, and a Rebels defense that had done nothing wrong yet.
Second Quarter

The game calmed down for eight minutes. Both teams punted, and UNLV’s one clean pass-rush moment came when Kenji Scanlan and Herb Gray split a sack of Tayven Jackson at the North Texas 22. The Rebels finally moved it, Arnold hitting Vincent Carner for 19, and Jai’Den Thomas broke an 18-yard run to the 3 that came right back on a holding call. Two plays went nowhere, and Ramon Villela kicked a 39-yarder at 5:38, UNLV’s first field goal of the season. 13-3. A touchdown drive turned into three points by a flag.
North Texas answered with eight plays and 75 yards. Justin Stevenson caught one for 27, Milliner took a short throw 24 yards to the 8, and Jackson kept it twice, 10 and then three, for the touchdown at 1:56. 20-3.
Then the drive that will get replayed all bye week. Fifteen plays, 74 yards, Taz Reddicks catching three straight to get it going. Jackson Arnold reached the 7 with 22 seconds left, spiked it, ran for three. He hit Keyan Burnett for three more to the 1 with the clock running and no timeouts. Fourth and goal, Glover up the middle, and Jaden Allen, the smallest guy on the roster, stopped him cold as the half ended. Third straight game the end of a half went sideways. 20-3 at the break.
Third Quarter

If there was any doubt, North Texas erased it in 2:28. Josiah Martin caught 16, then White went 43 yards down the left side to the UNLV 16, the longest play the Mean Green have had this season. Three snaps later, Jahiem White scored from the 5 at 12:32. 27-3, and the UNLV defense that had bent all first half started missing tackles.
The Rebels’ best drive of the day followed and still produced three points. Peyton Zachary returned the kickoff 18 yards, Thomas ran for eight, Arnold went deep right to Reddicks for 35, and a pass interference call put the ball at the 17. Then an intentional grounding penalty on Arnold and an incompletion, and Villela had to kick from 37 at 10:45. 27-6.
North Texas took 11 plays and 5:06 to go 75 yards, with White starting it with a 20-yard run and a pass interference call on Quandarius Keyes moving it to the 27. A Max Reese touchdown catch got wiped out by an illegal shift, and Jackson simply threw it to Reese again from 16 yards out at 5:39. 34-6. UNLV drove 58 yards on the next series and reached the North Texas 7, where Reddicks caught a pass, and Jason Cross Jr. stripped it at the 4. Third lost fumble. Second trip inside the 5 without a touchdown.
Fourth Quarter

Dan Mullen pulled Arnold with a little more than eight minutes left, right after a series that started with a Thomas fumble out of bounds and ended with a Brenden Reese sack at the 6. Choules punted out of his own end zone, and North Texas went 46 yards in seven plays. Stevenson caught one for 16, Martin for nine, and another pass interference call on Keyes at the goal line set up Brendon Haygood from the 9 for the first touchdown of his career at 8:24. 41-6.
Alex Orji got the rest of it, and it was mostly a look. He ran for 15 to midfield and another 17 late, which made him the only UNLV player who averaged double digits per carry all day. He also went 1-for-5 throwing and got picked off by Bryce Garza with 22 seconds left, the first interception of Garza’s career and the fourth UNLV turnover of the game.
In between, North Texas milked 4:08 off the clock and De Freitas closed it from 41 with 1:12 to play. 44-6. Cam Santee finished with a team-high eight tackles for UNLV, Denver Harris had seven and two tackles for loss, and none of it mattered because the offense handed the Mean Green the ball at the 23, the 47 and the 4.
Bottom Line

Start with the streaks, because they are what everybody will remember. UNLV had scored 20 or more in 36 straight regular-season games, by far the longest run in the nation, and had a rushing touchdown in 29 straight, second in FBS. Both are gone. So is a Mountain West-record six-game road winning streak against nonconference opponents. The last time the Rebels did not score a touchdown was September 18, 2021, a 48-3 home loss to Iowa State.
The turnovers decided it before halftime, and UNLV came in with zero lost turnovers on the season. Jackson Arnold’s strip sack at the 23 became three points. Glover’s fumble at the 47 became seven points three plays later. Reddicks’ fumble at the 4 took a touchdown off the board. Then a 15-play drive died at the 1 with no timeouts. North Texas started three first-quarter possessions in UNLV territory and never gave the ball back once. You do not win road games at minus-four.
The run game that carried Hawai’i week disappeared. Thirty-nine carries, 98 yards, 2.5 a pop. Thomas got 10 carries for 37. Arnold took four sacks for 35 yards and finished with minus-11 rushing, in his hometown, in front of people who watched him win national player of the year at Denton Guyer. The line that allowed one sack in Honolulu allowed four here and drew the holding call that erased an 18-yard run to the 3.
The defense held up for a half and then got run over. North Texas was 6-for-6 in the red zone and 7-of-13 on third down, and White averaged 10.3 a carry. Santee and Harris played hard. It was not enough. The Mean Green ran 67 plays for 444 yards, 6.6 per snap, and punted three times all afternoon.
Mullen said it himself: bad football is bad coaching. The Rebels are 1-2, both losses to American Conference teams, and North Texas had never beaten UNLV in a regular-season game before Saturday. Now comes a bye week to figure out the end of halves and the ball on the ground. Akron is next, on the road, September 26.
Post-Game
“The defense played good early, then comes out and plays terrible in the second half,” Mullen said in the team’s postgame release. “The offense never got it going. So, we’ve got a lot of things to fix as a team.”
He went further with reporters. “When you have bad football, that’s bad coaching,” Mullen said. “Really poorly coached in all three phases. That’s on us. We have to make it happen.”
On the turnovers and field position: “You can’t let a team start the game with three possessions on the plus side of the field. You can’t do that. You can’t go minus-four ratio in turnovers on the road. Everything hurts.”
On the bye week: “We’ll find out how we respond mentally, I promise you that. We’ll see. Maybe we have guys here, maybe we don’t. Maybe guys will be leaving. I don’t know. We’re going to find out how we respond to this. There’s one thing to do when you get knocked down. You get right back up and charge ahead.”
Arnold did not sugarcoat it. “We played like trash,” he said. “Every time we had a big play, it was negated by a penalty or turnover. Shoot, that’s probably the worst we’re going to look all season. We have a bye week now to fix things, go watch some film and correct our mistakes.”
