FSM Feature: Track and Field – Las Vegas Locals Strike Gold at Nationals
Celera Barnes and Vashti Cunningham shine in the High Jump and 60 Meters, respectively.
Las Vegas—known for its nightlife under the sprawling lights of the strip, this entertainment oasis in the Southern Nevada Desert has been gaining recognition for something just as exciting. With multiple professional teams having established or looking to call the valley home, sports is quickly becoming the biggest attraction in town.
Las Vegas has wasted no time in making its presence known in the sports world. With the Golden Knights claiming the Stanley Cup in 2023 and the Las Vegas Aces winning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, Sin City just might be looking for more reasons to change its nickname to Title Town.
USA Track and Field Indoor Championships
With the recent conclusion of this year’s USA Track and Field Indoor Championships, this city is one step closer to making a solid case for the nickname change, as Las Vegas locals Celera Barnes and Vashti Cunningham claim gold over the weekend at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY.
Cunningham, the Bishop Gorman HS grad and daughter of former Philadelphia Eagles great Randall Cunnigham, claimed her ninth consecutive indoor title in the high jump with the mark scored from her very first jump of the meet at 6ft 4.25 inches.
Barnes, the former USC Trojan, gave the fans something to cheer about as she took home the 60-meter title in photo finish fashion, with a time of 7.11 seconds.
The win gives Barnes the first national title of her promising career.
Both athletes now shift their focus to the Indoor World Championships, which will be held March 21-23 in Nanjing, China.
