On Saturday afternoon, the UNLV men’s basketball team suffered a shocking 87-86 loss Saturday to #20 Utah State at the Thomas & Mack Center

The game was decided on an Aggie five-point play with eight seconds left.
Luis Rodriguez made both of his free throw attempts to give UNLV an 86-82 lead with 14 seconds remaining. Darius Brown took the inbound pass down the right side of the court and made an off-balance 3-pointer. While the ball was in the air, Kalib Boone was called for a foul in the lane on Osobor, who then made both of his free throw attempts. Thomas Jr.’s potential game-winning jumper from the left elbow with two seconds left was long off the back of the rim.
Six UNLV players scored in double figures, led by Luis Rodriguez’s season-high 23 points. He also had a team-high nine rebounds, while Dedan Thomas Jr. recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists (with only one turnover) for the Runnin’ Rebels.
Utah State was led by Ian Martinez and Great Osobor, who scored 24 points each. Martinez was 6 of 8 on 3-pointers, while Osobor was 12 of 13 from the free-throw line and added 14 rebounds.

UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in an NCAA record of 1,208 straight games.

All-everything freshman sensation point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. got the scoring going for the Runnin’ Rebels after he laid the ball in to take a quick 2-0 lead. UNLV went on a 10-2 run to start the game.

Jackie Johnson III nailed the first three-pointer of the game for UNLV, extending their NCAA record streak and giving them a 19–8 lead with 14:07 left in the first half. Utah State went on a run of the road to cut the UNLV lead down to six with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.

But UNLV again extended their lead, this time to 11 after a Rob Whaley Jr. layup to make the score 30–19. With about 7:45 left in the first half, Utah State cut the lead down to just two, with the score 33–31.

UNLV got the lead back up to 9, but after an Aggies layup, neither team scored, and UNLV went into halftime with a 47–40 lead.
