In what is unquestionably Kevin Kruger’s most significant win as the head coach of UNLV, the Runnin’ Rebels defeated the #8 ranked Creighton Bluejays 79–64 in the Jack Jones Classic.

UNLV’s last win over a team ranked in the AP Top 10 national polls was on Feb. 22, 2020, when the Runnin’ Rebels defeated then #4 ranked San Diego State Aztecs, 66-63, in San Diego, snapping the Aztecs’ 26-game winning streak and ending their run as the nation’s only undefeated team.

Kalib Boone had a season-high 25 points, hitting 12-17 shots from the floor and grabbing seven boards and a game-high for steals. Freshman sensation DJ Thomas Jr. scored 16 points to go along with nine assists, six rebounds, a steal, and no turnovers on the win.

Keylan Boone, Kalib’s brother, made his much anticipated Runnin’ Rebels debut after he became eligible earlier in the day. A West Virginia judge ruled that all NCAA transfers are temporarily eligible.

That was obviously a lot more fun, but as I told the guys, the buy-in was clear and obvious from the moment we met to start getting ready for Creighton. Just understanding their firepower and how they are one of the best, if not the best, offensive teams that we will play not only this year, but maybe in our guys’ careers,Kruger said after the game.

Our team knew that the effort had to be at the level it was at to give ourselves a chance to win the game, and without a doubt, it was there. The tone was set early and I’m just really proud and happy for them, because, with a lot of the things that they’ve dealt with in terms of injuries and availability and asking guys to do certain things, for them to come out and get this type of win over a top 10 team, they deserve it.

UNLV also wore a patch that read “UNLV Strong” over their right shoulder. The patch honored those who were tragically killed in last week’s shooting on campus.

Boone got off to a fast start, getting UNLV on the board first with a jumper to start the game. Creighton went on another run, which was halted by a DJ Thomas jumper to make the score 8–4.

The UNLV three-point streak continues as Justin Webster hit the first three-pointer for UNLV with 16:40 in the first half, giving the Runnin’ Rebels a 9–8 lead.

The game remained close for the remainder of the first half, with the largest lead only being 8 points by UNLV. In the first half, the Runnin’ Rebels shot 55% from the floor, made four of nine three-point attempts, and made both free-throw attempts.

The UNLV defense did a great job on Creighton, holding them to 27% from the floor and 25% from three-point land in the first half.

DJ Thomas led the way in the first half. He had 14 points for UNLV.

Once again, Kalib Boone got the Runnin’ Rebels off to a fast start, hitting a jumper to increase their lead to 10 to start the second half. He then scored the following four UNLV points en route to his 25 points on the night.

Keylan Boone got his first UNLV points with a layup to give them a nine-point lead, 44–35. From that point on, the Runnin’ Rebels’ defense became smothering. They were dogging Creighton and forcing them to take tough shots.

At one point, the UNLV lead was 16, and the score was 62–46 when Justin Webster scored on Isaiah Cottrell’s steal. Keylan Boone then hit a three-pointer to increase the lead to 17.

UNLV would not be denied their upset win on Wednesday night. The Runnin’ Rebels’ defense continued to harass the #8 ranked Bluejays, as they finished off with a 15-point win, 79–64.
