FSM Essential Recap: UNLV vs Boise State – Game 19

UNLV (8-11) vs. Boise State (16-4)

The Runnin’ Rebels lose a close game, drop two in Boise.

UNLV drops their second straight game to Boise State as Caleb Grill could not hit a last-second shot with a chance to win. David Jenkins had another impressive performance off the bench for UNLV scoring a team-leading 19 points. Bryce Hamilton finished with 13 points and Caleb Grill contributed 11 points of his own.

The Runnin’ Rebels had a strong defensive game, however, they could not contain one man. That man goes by the name of Derrick Alston Jr. After being limited to only 9 points in Thursday’s win, Alston was nearly unstoppable on Saturday. The Senior had 27 points, shooting 50% from the field. He also made 6 of his 8 three-point attempts. His play helped lead his team to the 61-59 victory for their second straight win.

UNLV get a final shot, but can’t capitalize.

It was a quick start for Boise State as they took an early 10-2 lead thanks to a couple of three-pointers. UNLV had consistent offense throughout the first half getting scoring from a lot of different players. From that, they took a slim 28-27 lead into the break. Five minutes into the second half, UNLV had a one-point lead still before Boise State went on a 9-0 run to go up 43-35. This was a pivotal point in the game as the Broncos won the first game against UNLV on Thursday after they had a huge run that the Runnin’ Rebels couldn’t come back from.

Saturday night, it was different. UNLV scored the next 14 points to go on top 49-43. With just under two minutes to play the game was tied up at 55 points apiece. Devonaire Doutrive hit a two-point jump shot after David Jenkins made one of two free throws and with 32 seconds left Boise State had a one-point lead. Bryce Hamilton missed shots on back to back possessions that led to 3 out of 4 free throw makes for the Broncos. They had a four-point lead with 20 seconds left.

David Jenkins followed that with a clutch three-point bucket to bring UNLV within one with 13 seconds left. On the next possession, Bryce Hamilton forced a turnover which gave the Runnin’ Rebels one shot with the chance to win.

Unfortunately, Caleb Grill could not make it and UNLV fell to the Broncos by two points.

UNLV stays on the road to travel to San Jose State for two games looking to build off an impressive defensive display in the loss to Boise State.

The Runnin’ Rebels will have a chance to add some wins to their record after falling to Boise State twice as they play the Spartans of San Jose State who have struggled this season. They have a record of 5-13 and have had multiple five-game losing streaks this season. The Spartans have three wins against conference opponents, but all three of those wins are against the two teams below them in the standings. Two wins against Air Force and one against last-place New Mexico.

UNLV held the Mountain West Conferences number one offense to only 61 points total on Saturday night. Although it was a loss, it was very impressive from the Runnin’ Rebels and they will need that same energy on defense when playing the Spartans.

  • Devin Tillis led the Runnin’ Rebels with eight rebounds and made all six of his free-throw attempts.
  • Jenkins made 4 of 6 3-pointers.
  • UNLV held Boise State to just 37.5% shooting (21 of 56).
  • There were eight lead changes and two ties throughout the game.
  • UNLV led in bench scoring, 25-16.
  • UNLV led by one at halftime, 28-27.
  • Boise State increased its all-time lead in the series to 13-10 and the Runnin’ Rebels dropped to 2-9 all-time at Boise State.
  • Boise State improved to 9-0 at home this season.
  • UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in an NCAA-record 1,121 straight games.

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels get a long break before they play San Jose State for two games next Friday and SundayFriday’s game will be shown on Stadium at 6:30 p.m., while Sunday’s will be on FS1 at 1 p.m. Both games may be heard on ESPN Radio 1100 in Las Vegas.
