FSM Essential Recap: Las Vegas High School Football Week 7- 2022

Week 7 of the season supplied another great week of football all across the valley. This week, Desert Pines took on league opponent Green Valley, and the FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week featured two 4A Mountain league contenders, #9 Las Vegas Wildcats vs. #10 Basic Wolves.

Week seven had two games between league opponents. Coming off of their first win of the season, the Green Valley Gators hosted 4-1 #4 Desert Pines. And in the FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week, the 5-1 Basic Wolves traveled to the 4-1 Las Vegas Wildcats in a game that would determine who would have the lead in the 4A Mountain league.

The Las Vegas Wildcats edged out a victory over the Basic Wolves in a defensive-lead game Thursday night.

Both teams struggled to put up points for most of the contest as Basic and Las Vegas were both stout on defense.

Most of the first quarter remained scoreless after multiple failed drives from both teams. The Wildcats scored the game’s first points with a 65-yard touchdown catch from senior Ryan Harper with three minutes left in the period.

After another stop from the Wildcats‘ defense, the Las Vegas offense drove down the field inside Basic’s 10-yard line. With the Wildcats‘ offense threatening to make it a two-score game, Basic’s defense made a play to keep the game close as senior Avontae Toombs made a touchdown-saving interception in the endzone.

The turnover gave the Wolves a chance to put together a scoring drive to tie the game up, but the Wildcats would stop the drive before it could get going after recovering the ball off of a sack-fumble near Basic’s endzone. The Wildcats would punch the ball into the endzone with a touchdown run from junior Torrell Harley for the second and final score of the night.

Both teams put out great defensive performances Thursday night and showed why they are the top-two teams in their league. Following their week seven victory, the 5-1 Wildcats now sit in first place in the 4A Mountain league with a five-game winning streak. Despite two back-to-back losses, the Basic Wolves are still in the hunt at 5-2 with three games left to play before the playoffs.

Desert Pines locks up Green Valley in the second quarter in route to a 28-10 victory:

Desert Pines came out to Friday night’s game at Green Valley with bad intentions.

The Jaguars performed on both sides of the ball through all four quarters, including an explosive 2nd quarter in which Desert Pines scored 3-straight touchdowns to defeat The Gators 28-10.

The first quarter began with Desert Pines receiving the ball. The Jaguars made quick work in their first offensive drive as they drove down the field and scored the first touchdown of the game with a 5-yard touchdown pass and catch from senior Marquis Roby and freshman Massiah Mingo. Up 7-0, Desert Pines held Green Valley scoreless through the rest of the quarter.

Green Valley started to get things going in the second quarter. The Gators‘ defense got a stop to begin the quarter and gave their offense the ball on their own 42-yard line. The offense managed to drive down the field but settled for a field goal, making the score 7-3. The field goal drive kept the game close for the Gators, but the game changed quickly once the Jaguars’ offense took the field.

Desert Pines received the ball and drove down the field for another touchdown connection between Roby and Mingo, making the score 14-3. Facing a tough position, the Gators needed to get down the field and score to avoid falling behind. Still, the Jaguars‘ defense decided to make things worse for their opponents as freshman Trey Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 40-yards for a touchdown.

Down 21-3, the Gators started the ensuing drive with their backs against the wall and desperately needing someone to make a play to get out of the hole they sat in. The Jaguars buried them in the hole with another Jackson pick-6, this time going 101-yards to make the score 28-3 going into the half.

Three-straight unanswered scores gave Desert Pines the lead for the rest of the second half, with Green Valley only scoring one touchdown in the third quarter, ending the game with the final score, 28-10.

Desert Pines looked impressive in their week seven matchup, as they have all year. Their win on Friday night gave Desert Pines their 5th straight win of the season and put them in first place in the 5A Southern-Mountain league. With a lot of young talent and solid players on both sides of the ball, it will be a challenge for any team hoping to compete with the Jaguars for that top spot in the remaining three weeks of the regular season.
