On Friday afternoon, the Las Vegas Raiders made it official, making Antonio Pierce their permanent head coach. Josina Anderson was the first to report that Pierce’s agent was meeting with the Raiders, and Adam Schefter was the first to report that the team and Pierce were nearing a deal.

Pierce, a former linebacker in the NFL for Washington and the New York Giants, will take over as the Raiders‘ head man. It is a meteoric rise for Pierce. He previously served as Long Beach Poly High School’s head coach, then moved on to the associate head coach for Arizona State before becoming the Raiders linebacker coach under Josh McDaniels two years ago.

The Raiders went 5–4 with Pierce as their interim head coach after moving from Josh McDaniels on October 31st, 2023.

Under McDaniel’s, the Raiders went 9–16 in 25 games and showed no life or passion on the field. Once Pierce took over the team, the Raiders showed a new spirit and enthusiasm, and it seemed that the “Raider Way” was back in the Silver and Black.

Pierce brought the team together and galvanized them. Davante Adams, Maxx Crosby, Josh Jacobs, and other players openly campaigned for Pierce to remain the head coach, and it appears Raiders owner Mark Davis has listened.

As a player, Pierce had to make the most of every chance he got. Pierce went to Mount San Antonio College before heading to the University of Arizona.

Pierce went undrafted and signed with the then-named Washington Redskins where he made eight starts as a rookie. After four seasons in Washington, he moved on to the New York Giants and became the starting middle linebacker and team captain, which included a Super Bowl win in 2008. Pierce retired in 2010.

One name that is likely to be on Pierce’s staff in a formal capacity is former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. Pierce brought in Lewis to help him after being named interim head coach, and has a relationship going back to their days in Washington together.

The Raiders are also likely to name a general manager shortly. Interim Raiders general manager Champ Kelly and Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds are two names closely tied to the position.
