On Saturday afternoon it’s UNLV vs Boise State for the right to be called the Mountain West Champions. Can the Rebels win their first-ever Mountain West Conference title?

After all the smoke cleared and the computer crunched the numbers, it concluded that it would be UNLV hosting the Boise State Broncos in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game.

To be frank, the computer got it right. San Jose State can be upset, but their loss to Air Force, at home, most likely was the deciding factor. After Boise State beat Air Force on Friday, it all but assured UNLV a place in the MWC title game.

But after the Rebels lost to San Jose State, it was up to the computers to decide who would be participating and where the game would be played.

It’s the Rebels first time playing in the game, while the Broncos have been in the title game 11 times.

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host the Mountain West Championship game,” said UNLV head coach Barry Odom. “We have great respect for Boise State and the year they have had to get to the championship game. Our team has worked tirelessly to compete for a championship! To host the game in Las Vegas at Allegiant is just tremendous.

We are ecstatic to be hosting the Mountain West Championship game at Allegiant Stadium,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Erick Harper. “I am very proud of Coach Odom, our players, and staff on what they accomplished to this point. It is a credit to the work that they have put in during this journey. We absolutely need everyone at the game Saturday – we are calling on all Rebel fans to be there and support this team in what promises to be a great matchup in our city.

In the last few weeks, the Rebels have had one quarter where it seemed like the wheels fell off the bus. UNLV needs to avoid that in this game. Last week against San Jose State, it was the first quarter. the week before that against Wyoming, it was the second quarter. Against Fresno State, it was the third quarter.

This week they will be facing a Broncos team that relies a ton on their running game. UNLV needs to stop the Boise State rushing attack and force them into passing situations where they have struggled all season long.

Boise State is led by their running back Ashton Jeanty. On the year, he ran for 1,109 yards and 13 touchdowns. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry as well as caught 37 balls for 537 yards and 5 touchdowns.

The Rebels need to stop him and force quarterback Taylen Green to throw the ball. He completed 55% of his passes on the year for only 1,526 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also had 8 interceptions to go along with 7 sacks.

UNLV has to force Boise State into 3rd and long situations and continue to put pressure and force their will on the Boise State offense. That will be a tall task, considering the Broncos have one of the best offensive lines in the conference, but when UNLV has been successful, it has been when they attacked defenses.

Offensively, UNLV has to be aggressive.

The Rebels have one of the best receivers in all of college football in Ricky White III, who is poised to have a huge game against a bad Boise State pass defense. The Broncos pass defense ranked 12th in the conference, so I would expect Rebels quarterback Jayden Maiava and the UNLV offense to come out firing on all cylinders through the air.

But the strength of the UNLV offense has been the rushing attack. So I would expect a good balance of run/pass to keep Boise State off balance. Led by a quartet of running backs, each offering something different and special to the offense, the Rebels should be able to move the ball up and down the field.

During his introductory press conference, Coach Odom talked about the importance of special teams. Taking the Michigan game out of the equation, in the two games that UNLV lost this season in the conference, the special teams did not have great games.

This week the special teams have to come up once again if UNLV wants to win the Mountain West Conference championship. The Rebels have two All-Conference special teams players and I expect kicker Jose Pizano and return specialist Jacob De Jesus to have a huge impact on the game.

Lastly, UNLV has to have a home-field advantage. Yes, the game is being played at Allegiant Stadium, but the crowd has to be pro-UNLV to create havoc when the Broncos have the ball.

For the first time in school history, the second deck will be open for a Rebels game. This is a good sign that the majority of the crowd will be Rebel-Rousers.

It’s time for some Rebels football! #RebelUp and #BeatTheBlueOffBoise!
