The high school football playoffs wasted no time delivering some of the best games of the season on Thursday night. Multiple upsets and dominant performances across the Valley provided an exciting start to the postseason. That said, the best game of the night occurred at Green Valley High School as the Gators (3-4) defeated the Sierra Vista Mountain Lions (4-5) in a 40-39 battle that went down to the wire in the 3rd overtime period.

In a game that became a shootout in the second half, the first quarter of Thursday night’s game featured two stingy defenses that made it difficult to reach the end zone.

Both Sierra Vista and Green Valley failed to reach the end zone in both of their opening offensive drives, resulting in both teams settling for field goals to make the score 3-3. The first big play of the game came as Sierra Vista returned the following kick-off down to Green Vally’s 6-yard line. This set up the first touchdown of the game as Sierra Vista’s junior running back, Adonis Vaughn, ran the ball into the end zone, giving the Mountain Lions a 9-3 lead after missing the extra point at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Green Valley and Sierra Vista continued to hold firm on the defensive side of the ball as both teams were forced to punt on their next two offensive possessions. With a couple of hard runs for big gains and a touchdown pass from the FSM Prep Rally Player of the Game, Senior Jack Thow, the Gators managed to score the first points of the second quarter and tied the score, 9-9 after missing the extra point going into halftime.

After marching down to Sierra Vista’s 8-yard line on their opening drive of the half, Green Valley had the opportunity to claim the lead. After failing to reach the goal line, the Gators decided to go for the field goal, but a muffed snap forced a turnover on downs. Both teams struggled to put together any offense for the rest of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the special teams for both teams took over the game. After multiple stalled-out offensive drives, Green Valley’s special team unit made a play with a long punt return by Senior Ben Byington that set the Gators up at the 1-yard line and the go-ahead touchdown run. After going down 16-9, Sierra Vista answered with a big return of their own with a long kick return for a touchdown to even the score, 16-16.

Green Valley’s offense finally managed to put together a long drive as they punched the ball into the end zone with another touchdown pass from Thow. With only a few minutes left in the game, Sierra Vista answered back after putting together a long offensive drive that finished with a 3-yard touchdown run to even the score 23-23 and sent the game into overtime.

In the first and second overtime periods, Green Valley and Sierra Vista exchanged scores as both teams managed to put up three points in the first OT, then a touchdown each in the second OT period. In the 3rd overtime period, special teams stepped up again to decide the game. After Sierra Vista punched the ball into the end zone on a 7-yard touchdown run, Green Valley managed to block the extra point to make the score 39-32 with the ball back in their possession. With his fourth touchdown pass of the game, Jack Thow completed a dart to junior Trey Glasper on their following drive, set up the walk-off extra point, and gave Green Valley its first home playoff victory in over seven seasons.

Despite a thrilling performance in one of the best games of the 2023 season, It will be a quick turnaround for the Green Valley Gators going into the second round. Having the Bye in the first round, the league champion Basic Wolves will be well rested. They will look to secure a second victory over Green Valley after defeating the Gators in week 9 of the regular season. It will be a Henderson Bowl rematch.

It will be a challenge to face the champs of the division following a hard-fought game in the first round, but if Green Valley brings the same mentality they had Thursday night against Sierra Vista, the Gators’ chances will be high of seeing past the semifinal round of this year’s postseason.

The final score in the Sierra Vista vs Green Valley game was the Gators beating the Mountain Lions, 40-39.
