As another thrilling high school football regular season comes to a close, the real action is set to begin with the first round of the high school football playoffs.

The top teams from all seven divisions of the new realigned landscape will look to keep their seasons alive and push toward the ultimate goal of playing for a state championship. Some of the biggest games this week will feature teams with previous playoff football experience and teams that have recently become contenders since the new division realignment.

In the 5A classification, injury-riddled Arbor View will host Shadow Ridge in a matchup between two formidable playoff teams from the previous high school football format. While in the 4A division, Bonanza and Cheyenne will battle for a playoff victory just a year after missing the playoffs during the 2022 season.

In one of the week’s biggest matchups, two teams from the Division II South classification will battle for a chance to advance and face the division champions, Basic Wolves, in the second round of the playoffs. In the FSM Prep Rally Game of the Week, the Green Valley Gators (3-6) host the Sierra Vista Mountain Lions (4-4) in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NIAA Football Playoffs.

Both teams in Thursday’s FSM prep Rally Game of the Week experienced their fair share of ups and downs during this 2023 season.

The Green Valley Gators had a rough start as they began the season with four straight-away losses. The Gators struggled to put up points during that skid as their opponents outscored them 151-47. It wasn’t until week five that Green Valley managed to score more than 20 points as they secured their first victory against the Las Vegas Wildcats. The Gators followed their first win with another one in a 43-27 victory against Durango in their next outing.

The Gators would lose back-to-back games against the two top teams in the division in Foothill and Basic. Despite suffering another losing streak, Green Valley managed to end the regular season on a high note as they defeated Sierra Vista at home with a 26-13 victory, bringing their record to 3-6 on the year.

Before losing to the Gators in the final week of the regular season, Sierra Vista faced their own triumphs and trials in 2023.

The Mountain Lions had a better start to their season as they opened the year with a 34-26 victory over out-of-state opponent Northview. Sierra Vista would then face one of the best teams in the division in Basic and take the Wolves down to the wire in a 14-13 loss. The Mountain Lions bounced back the following week with a victory over Durango but suffered a shutout loss to Faith Lutheran, 10-0. After going back and forth between wins and losses, Sierra Vista went on a two-game winning streak before losing to Green Valley, 26-13, in the final game of the regular season.

Thursday night’s game will be a rematch between Sierra Vista, who finished the year in fifth place in the Division II South, and Green Valley, who ended the regular season with a win over the Mountain Lions and the fifth-best record in the division.

Despite closing out the year with a victory over Sierra Vista, the Gators have struggled offensively throughout the season. Without the ability to put points on the board, Green Valley may struggle against a Mountain Lion defense that managed to hold Basic to only 14 points. Meanwhile, Sierra Vista has struggled to be consistent. Despite playing multiple games where they looked like contenders, the Mountain Lions have been unable to maintain that level of play and suffered multiple losses because of it.

Both teams will look to put their best performances out on the field Thursday night at Green Valley High School. Despite all of the struggles of the regular season, the postseason offers a chance for a fresh start. Whichever team can overcome their struggles will keep their title dreams alive and move on to the next round for a rematch with the division champion, Basic Wolves in the semifinals.
