Turnovers and a Leaky Defense Sink Las Vegas in a 97-82 Loss to Atlanta

There is no dressing this one up, so let us not try. The Las Vegas Aces ran into a hot, physical Atlanta Dream team on Tuesday night and lost 97-82 inside Michelob ULTRA Arena, a game where shaky defense and careless ballhandling did most of the damage. Las Vegas falls to 24-13; Atlanta climbs to 22-13. A’ja Wilson was magnificent, posting game highs of 27 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks while going a perfect 12 for 12 at the line, and Jackie Young poured in 24 points with a team-best 5 assists. Chelsea Gray added 13 and NaLyssa Smith chipped in 10. It was not enough. Rhyne Howard torched the home team for 23, Angel Reese stuffed the sheet with 21 points and 10 boards, Allisha Gray matched 21, and Jordin Canada added 17. The 17 turnovers, which Atlanta turned into 18 points, told most of the story, and a 44-22 beating in the paint told the rest. Wilson still made history on a deflating night, but Las Vegas could not string together enough stops to make it count.

First Quarter

The opening quarter was the Aces at their best, which makes everything that followed sting as much as the last couple of weeks for Las Vegas women’s basketball. Atlanta jumped out to an early 8-2 edge and held the front of the scoreboard until Las Vegas answered with a 10-4 run to knot it at 12 apiece just past the midway point. This was a back-and-forth quarter, with six tied scores in the first 10 minutes alone. Behind eight quick points from Wilson, who also swatted three shots in the period, the home team grabbed its first lead at 20-17 and never let the quarter get away. Young and Gray kept the supporting cast humming, and the ball moved with real purpose. The bench provided a spark, and Las Vegas looked like the more connected squad for a full 10 minutes. Las Vegas was surgical, hitting 55.6 percent from the floor on 10 of 18 shooting and a scorching 4 of 6 from deep, good for 66.7 percent. Atlanta was fine but not great, at 8 of 18 (44.4 percent) with a pair of made threes. The teams swapped baskets over the final 2 minutes, and Wilson led all scorers with 8 points while two Atlanta players chipped in 6 apiece. Las Vegas took the quarter 25-24, and if you left after 10 minutes, you liked the Aces game plan and execution.

Second Quarter

Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, back in the lineup for the first time since July 28 after clearing concussion protocol, opened the second quarter with a bucket, and for a moment things looked like they should. Then the bottom fell out. Atlanta ripped off a 19-4 run to build a 43-31 lead, and during that stretch the Aces missed 8 consecutive field goal attempts. Their only 4 points in that span came from A’ja Wilson at the free throw line. The Dream were relentless in transition and at the offensive glass, and every Las Vegas miss seemed to turn into points the other way. It got chippy, too. Head coach Becky Hammon was ejected at the 5:06 mark after picking up a pair of technical fouls, the second ejection of her career and her first since Los Angeles on June 9, 2024. Gray finally stopped the bleeding with a three that trimmed it to 43-34 with three and a half minutes left. Las Vegas clawed back within 48-41, but Atlanta closed the half on a 4-0 push for an 11-point cushion. The numbers were ugly: the Aces shot just 25 percent (4 of 16) and 28.6 percent from deep, while the Dream cooked at 64.3 percent overall and 66.7 percent from three. Reese led everyone with 8, and Wilson led the home side with 6.

Third Quarter

Down 11 at the break, Las Vegas came out with life and reeled off the first 5 points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 6. That was as close as it would get for a while. Atlanta responded with a 12-3 run to stretch its lead to 64-49, the largest margin of the period, and the Aces defense simply had no answers on the perimeter or at the rim. To their credit, they did not fold. Young caught fire and scored 10 points during a 12-5 Las Vegas spurt that pulled the home team back within 8 at 69-61, and the building woke up. Then the Dream landed the final bucket of the quarter to steady themselves. Here is the maddening part: this was a low-scoring, raggedy ass quarter for both teams. Las Vegas shot just 5 of 16 (31.2 percent) and 3 of 10 from beyond the arc, but Atlanta was even worse from the floor at 6 of 21 (28.6 percent) and 2 of 6 from three. The Aces went 7 of 8 at the line and the Dream a perfect 5 of 5. Young led all scorers with 13 in the period, and Howard chipped in 7 for the visitors. After 30 minutes, it stood at Atlanta 71, Las Vegas 61, a game still very much within reach.

Fourth Quarter

For all the damage done in the second and third quarters, Las Vegas would not go quietly. The Aces trimmed the Atlanta lead to 7 at 83-76 near the midway point of the fourth, and Michelob ULTRA Arena, riding its 64th straight sellout, started to believe again. The problem was that the Dream had a counter for every punch. Every time the home team got a stop and a bucket, Atlanta answered right back. Wilson scored 4 in a row to shave the margin to its smallest of the second half, 88-82, with under 2 minutes to play, and that was the last real threat. Atlanta closed the game on a 9-0 run to put it to bed. Shot-making was scarce for everyone down the stretch, as the two teams combined to go just 1 of 10 from three-point range in the quarter. Las Vegas actually shot a tidy 6 of 13 (46.2 percent) and sank all 8 of its free throw attempts, while the Dream hit 9 of 18 and made 8 of 10 at the line. Jackie Young and Gray kept firing and Smith did her work inside, but the hole was simply too deep. Wilson finished the night a perfect 12 of 12 at the stripe, the kind of individual line that deserved a far better team result.

Bottom Line

So where does that leave us? This loss was about two numbers: 44 to 22 in the paint and 18 to 5 in points off turnovers. Give up that much easy offense and cough it up 17 times against a team that swiped 15 steals, and you lose, even with a big effort at the top of your box score. That paint total was the second-lowest of the season for Las Vegas, and it was not close. Even so, there was history made. A’ja Wilson turned in her 63rd career game with at least 25 points and 10 rebounds, a league-high 13th such night this season, and her 19th ever with 25, 10 and 10 made free throws, a line only Elena Delle Donne has reached more than once. It was her 27th 20-point game of the year and the 189th of a career that now trails only Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles. She has scored in double figures a league-best 58 straight games, and by suiting up for her 301st contest, she tied Sophia Young-Malcolm for the most in franchise history. Chelsea Gray climbed to No. 7 on the franchise two-point makes list and tied Kayla McBride for 27th on the league’s all-time steals chart, while Young passed Natalie Williams for 5th in team rebounding history. The rebound margin was a wash at 33-32, and the Aces blocked a season-high 12 shots. None of it mattered. Las Vegas sits at 24-13 and has to clean up the giveaways.
