The Los Angeles Lakers have now lost their fourth straight game and fifth in six games after being defeated by the Minnesota Timberwolves, 118-111. Their record drops to 15-14.

Despite being without co-star LeBron James, Anthony Davis had a masterful performance with 31 points (11-of-20 FGs, 8-of-9 FTs), eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

It sucks to lose,” Davis said. “Four in a row is tough; obviously, you want to get back in the win column. But I think overall, our effort was there tonight.”

Davis’ effort remains unquestioned, as over the last six games, Davis has averaged 32.5 points on 60 percent shooting from the field and 55 percent from beyond the arc, as well as 12.8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game.

Another Laker making heavy contributions is Austin Reaves, who scored 20+ points (7-of-14 FGs, 1-of-4 3s, 5-of-5 FTs) for the seventh time in the last nine games, as well as collecting eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals in this contest.

I feel good, confident, playing the game the right way,” Reaves said. “Game feels like it’s in the right spot, shot feels good. Now, it’s just about figuring out how to win these games. That’s all that matters to me.”

Also for Los Angeles, Rui Hachimura had 18 points (7-of-12 FGs, 2-of-5 3s, 2-of-6 FTs) and four rebounds. D’Angelo Russell started rough but finished with 17 points (7-of-19 FGs, 2-of-6 3s), four rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and three blocks.

Russell has been in a shooting slump as of late, as he averaged 18 points per game in November but just nine points per game so far in December.

I’ve just gotta be better,” Russell said. “No excuses.”

As for Minnesota, Anthony Edwards was in his bag, totaling 27 points (9-of-19 FGs, 2-of-6 3s, 7-of-8 FTs), seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Karl Anthony-Towns followed suit with 21 points (7-of-17 FGs, 2-of-6 3s, 5-of-6 FTs), six rebounds, and four assists. Rudy Gobert had 15 points (6-of-11 FGs, 3-of-6 FTs), 13 rebounds, and three blocks.

We’ll break through this thing once we get guys back healthy, get guys back in rhythm,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “We’ll be OK.”

Lakers vs Timberwolves First Quarter:

The Lakers started this one 5-for-5 from the field, enough for a 10-5 lead. However, things already went awry as Davis picked up his second foul at the 5:19 mark of the first quarter. Despite the foul situation, Davis pushed forward and had 10 of Los Angeles’ 21 points as they led by five.

The Lakers mixed up their rotation against the giant Timberwolves, as Christian Wood logged his first rotation minutes in three games. Los Angeles did this as they tried to buy two minutes to close the first quarter with Davis on the bench due to his two personal fouls. They were tied at 24 when he exited the game.

It ended up not being a bad period for the Lakers despite being so short-handed after Taurean Prince’s buzzer-beating 3 stood. Minnesota outscored Los Angeles 20-11 over the final 3:43 of the quarter, taking a 36-32 lead. Davis already had 10 points and four rebounds.

The Lakers shot the ball well (52.2 percent) but were hurt by their six turnovers.

Lakers vs Timberwolves 2nd Quarter:

Russell’s December shooting struggles continued in this one as he had four points on 2-of-7 shooting midway through the second quarter.

Los Angeles hung around in this one despite not having James, only trailing 63-59 at halftime. Davis was now up to 18 points, five rebounds, and one block, while Reaves had 12 points and three assists.

Davis (22 points, six boards, four assists, two blocks) continued to control the matchup against Gobert (four points, six boards, two assists, three blocks) as he has in the past.

After a Prince 3-pointer tied the game at 70-70, the Timberwolves responded with back-to-back layups.

Davis had made more jump shots in this contest thus far (five) than he made in November (four), his most recent one tying the game at 79 after his and-1 free throw.

Minnesota got a three from Naz Reid, his third off Minnesota’s bench, at the end of the shot clock with five seconds to go, putting the Timberwolves up 87-83 heading into the fourth period.

Los Angeles tied the game once and loosely took the lead in the third but couldn’t sustain it. Davis had 27 points and eight rebounds, and Reaves had 16 points and five rebounds. Meanwhile, Russell was just 2-for-11 from the field.

Lakers vs Timberwolves 4th Quarter:

The fourth quarter hardly mattered for the outcome of this game as Minnesota wanted it more, though the most significant change for the Lakers was that Russell finally found his shot, shooting 5-for-8 in the fourth.

The Los Angeles Lakers will now take on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, December 23rd, at 5:00 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
