The Lakers bounced back big time with a 26-point victory against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. They traveled back closer to the West Coast as they took on the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night. This was L.A.’s fourth game on a back-to-back this season where they have a 1-2 record so far.

The Lakers were severely shorthanded in this one as Cam Reddish and Jaxson Hayes joined Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and Jarred Vanderbilt on the inactive list. LeBron James and Anthony Davis were able to play despite it being a back-to-back, but that didn’t matter as the Thunder were the fresher team and wound up coming away with a 133-110 victory.

Given how the Lakers have performed on the back end of back-to-backs this season versus teams with an above-average offense, this almost feels like a scheduled loss once again. But games like Wednesday’s commanding victory over the Pistons always make it seem as if this team can compete with anyone on any given night.

On Thursday night, though, the Lakers would go up against a rising superstar in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is currently averaging the fourth most points in the league (30.5) and has led his team to be one of the few ones with a current top 10 ranked offense and defense.

This Thunder team is also one of the few that seem like a complete squad from top to bottom. From Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams in the front court and Lu Dort and Josh Giddey in the forward and guard spots, respectively, this squad is currently the best 3-point shooting (40.3%) team in the league. Their 3-point shooting is a big reason they’re ranked sixth in points per game (118.6).

L.A. finished its road trip at 2-2 and will return home with an 11-9 record.

Despite being shorthanded in the second of a back-to-back, the Lakers got off to a quick start in this one. Davis was going right at Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren, picking up two early fouls on him, and James and Taurean Prince both connected from deep to give the Lakers an early lead. Max Christie and D’Angelo Russell also got in on the action from deep to make the lead double-digits at 27-16.

A.D. was dominant, imposed his will on the game, and poured in 15 points in the first frame. Mix in a strong shooting start from range, and the Lakers built a lead as large as 14 points.

Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got going to end the quarter, so the Lakers’ lead was cut to 37-30 going into the second.

Oklahoma City continued its run into the second quarter with Davis on the bench. They eventually tied it and took a 48-46 lead, forcing Darvin Ham to take a timeout.

LeBron got going offensively out of the timeout by attacking the basket. The Lakers got careless with the ball and couldn’t stop fouling, allowing the Thunder to build their own double-digit lead.

The foul trouble began to mount for the Lakers, and the outside shooting regressed to the mean, leading to an 11-point lead at 65-54 after a 17-4 run. As the half wore on, the Lakers looked a step slower than the Thunder and headed into the locker room down 12, totaling a 26-point swing in the first half alone.

L.A. trailed the Thunder 72-60 heading into the locker room.

Lakers vs Thunder 3rd Quarter:

It was the start of the Lakers vs Thunder third quarter.

Davis continued his aggressive play for the Lakers to begin the third quarter. The only problem was that no one else seemed to be matching him.

There was no surge out of the game in the second half for the Lakers as the Thunder lead only grew. A timeout midway through the quarter came with OKC up 91-75 after consecutive layups for Luguentz Dort. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander kept attacking the paint, and no one of the Lakers could stop him. And after a quiet first half, Holmgren got going, even connecting on a triple to extend the Thunder lead to 20 at 108-88 going into the fourth quarter.

If the Lakers were going to make a run, it would have to come early in the fourth quarter.

The lead was trimmed to 15 points on a couple of occasions, and the Lakers did play just hard enough to keep the game interesting for most of the quarter.

But the game was more or less over on a five-point swing with just over four minutes remaining. LeBron found A.D. for a dunk that would have cut the lead to 13 but was blocked before OKC knocked down a 3-pointer on the other end, instead pushing the lead to 18.

The final score was OKC 133, the Lakers 110.
