It was the Lakers vs Rockets at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday. The Lakers returned home to take on the Houston Rockets for the third time in less than a month.

LA went out on a four-game road trip and came out with a 2-2 record, with the finale against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday ending up being a 133-110 blowout loss. It was a game where the Lakers would take an early 14-point lead but ultimately could not sustain it as things got out of hand quickly.

The purple and gold had to roll with an eight-man rotation due to multiple injuries to rotational players, so 2-2 is not the end of the world. But reinforcements were on the way on Saturday as the team was nearly at full strength, with the only injured player, Gabe Vincent, expected to be out.

Jarred Vanderbilt would make his season debut, while Rui Hachimura was scheduled to return from his nasal fracture, Cam Reddish was also back in the lineup from a groin injury, Jaxson Hayes came back from his elbow issue, and LeBron James and Anthony Davis were set to play as well. It seemed the Lakers finally caught a break and can now play at nearly full strength for the first time all season.

The Rockets made their last trip to Crypto.com Arena on November 19 when the Lakers pulled out a 105-104 win. Familiar foe Dillon Brooks dropped 24 points with six 3-pointers, so fans expected a juiced-up Brooks again for this one as he lives to play against James. Alperen Sengun chipped in with 23 points and ten rebounds as he continues to develop as a big man.

Entering the game, Houston was the only team in the NBA without a road win at 0-7, and LA had done an excellent job at protecting home court with a 7-2 record.

Lakers vs Thunder First Quarter:

It was the start of the Lakers vs Thunder in the first quarter.

Much of the first quarter was slow for the Lakers as the Rockets took off with the early lead. The first quarters have been a struggle for the Lakers all season long, and another slow start had them trailing the Rockets.

Jarred Vanderbilt made his long-awaited 2023-24 season debut and was eased into the action off the bench. Vanderbilt played 14 minutes and failed to score, but he still gave the team his usual mix of defense and hustle.

Despite playing much better as the quarter was winding down, the Rockets led the Lakers 30-25 at the end.

However, the second quarter was a completely different story as they played near-flawless basketball on both ends to take the lead and never looked back.

Anthony Davis had the roughest start of the team as he missed his first six shots from the field before D’Angelo Russell found him underneath for a dunk. Shortly after, though, Davis rediscovered his scoring touch as he was able to shoot over the undersized Houston roster.

LeBron started heating up in the second quarter and was the only one from both teams in double figures with 10 points. Dillon Brooks was given a technical foul, much to the joy of the fans in the arena.

An AD block leading into a Reaves dunk helped push the Lakers’ lead to five. An 18-2 run pushed the lead to nine. Reaves scored 15 points in 15 minutes after starting the game off slow.

The Lakers led 60-44 at the half.

Lakers vs Thunder 3rd Quarter:

It was the start of the Lakers vs Thunder third quarter.

Like Davis, Austin Reaves had a tough time shooting the basketball in the first quarter, as he missed his first three shots. However, almost like he flipped a switch, Reaves instantly caught fire from the field as he was aggressive in getting to the rim and had his jumper going.

Reaves made several flashy plays to ignite their large second-quarter run, and he wound up leading the bench with 18 points to go along with four rebounds, one assist, and three steals.

LeBron James always seems to relish his matchup with Dillon Brooks, and the King made sure the Lakers had the last laugh as he bullied his way to the rim for several easy scores.

James had the highlight of the night as he drove baseline and converted a fantastic 360 layup that got the bench and the Lakers crowd up on their feet.

The fourth quarter began with the Lakers extending their lead to 19. After a few players exchanged some not-so-friendly words, Rockets coach Ime Udoka was ejected after he was given a second technical on the night.

The Lakers kept their foot on the gas for much of the quarter. The Rockets were pesky as the game was winding down and made it a 10-point game. Even with a sudden Rockets surge, it wasn’t enough as the Lakers held on to win.

The collective defensive effort Saturday night was great. Seven blocks (five of which belonged to AD) and 11 steals as a team was very impressive. An honorary mention to Christie for his hard work tonight, especially his defense on Fred VanVleet a few times.

The final score was the Lakers beating the Rockets, 107-97.
