The Los Angeles Lakers improved to 42-33 and 3-1 on their road trip after defeating the Brooklyn Nets 116-104.

LeBron James exploded for a jaw-dropping 40 points and a career-high-tying nine 3-pointers.

Not very long,” James said of how long he expects to continue playing in the NBA. “I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure. I don’t know when that door will close as far as when I’ll retire. But I don’t have much time left.”

James is now shooting 41.5 percent from 3 this season after shooting 32.1 percent last season. It’s the highest percentage of his 21-year career. His previous high was 40.6 percent in 2012-13, on 3.3 attempts per game (5.2 this year).

His previous Laker high was 36.5 percent in 2020-21.

For the rest of the squad:

Anthony Davis chipped in 24 points (9-of-12 FGs, 5-of-6 FTs), 14 rebounds, and three blocks.

Rui Hachimura had 20 points (8-of-12 FGs, 1-of-4 3s) and ten rebounds.

D’Angelo Russell totaled 18 points (6-of-13 FGs, 4-of-11 3s), six rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Russell had four steals for the first time since March 4th vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.

For the Nets:

Cameron Thomas was a certified bucket-getter, finishing with 30 points (8-of-22 FGs, 4-of-7 3s, 10-of-12 FTs) and six assists.

Trendon Watford came off the bench and put up 15 points (7-of-10 FGs) and eight rebounds.

Former Laker Dennis Schroder had 14 points (5-of-12 FGs, 2-of-6 3s).

It was a strong start at the rim for Los Angeles, as a dunk and two free throws for Davis, and a dunk for Hachimura had them up 6-0, forcing Nets coach Kevin Ollie to call a timeout at the 10:05 mark of the first quarter.

The Lakers’ lead was up to 15-0 at the 8:17 mark of the first after a layup from James, corner three from Hachimura, and a fast break dunk from Davis (James’ assist), all with defensive stops in between (Brooklyn was 0-for-8). The Lakers were locked in mentally on both ends.

Los Angeles’ lead ballooned to 26-4 with 4:11 to play in the first after a pair of free throws from James, while Davis had 13 points already.

The Lakers took a 31-11 lead out of the first period in Brooklyn, with a dominant effort from the starters opening the big lead.

The Nets scored just 11 points in 12 minutes but already had 17 points in the first 3.5 minutes of the second.

Los Angeles needed three James 3’s to maintain a 15-point edge at 43-28 after they led by as many as 24 in the first.

Gabe Vincent, in his return, was active defensively in his eight minutes, consistently getting through screens and battling for position. He took three shots, hitting just one, a tough bank shot moving to his left.

Russell, the franchise leader in 3’s in a season for both of these teams, hit his second of the night to put Los Angeles up 59-39.

The Lakers’ starters dominated both of their shifts, as they took a 67-44 lead into the halftime break, capped by a James bucket that gave him 15 points with six boards and five assists, next to Davis’ 20 points and eight boards.

Austin Reaves and Russell took turns ripping Nets players off the ball and turning them into buckets to put Los Angeles up 72-46 early in the third.

However, the Lakers were forced to regroup after a quick 7-0 Brooklyn run. Los Angeles still led by 19 at the 7:40 mark of the third.

The Lakers gave up nine points in the final 48 seconds of the third to see their lead down to just 11 points at 90-79 with 12 minutes to play. They turned it over ten times in the third, a way-too-high number.

Two more triples from James (his sixth and seventh of the game) were necessary, with Thomas hitting his third and fourth to start the fourth.

Los Angeles led 97-85 after James split a pair of free throws to reach 30 points on just 13 shots. As soon as James matched his career high with nine triples, the Brooklyn crowd rose to its feet, hoping for his 10th, as the Lakers led 111-93.

James exited the game to a standing ovation after his 40 points on 9-of-10 shooting from 3 got the job done. He took only 17 shots overall for those 40 points, plus seven boards and six assists, and was a +22.

The Los Angeles Lakers will now take on the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 4:00 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
