It was the Lakers vs Mavericks at American Airlines Arena on Tuesday. With the Lakers winning the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament over the weekend, they looked to continue to stay hot Tuesday night as they took on the Dallas Mavericks.

Going from playing high-intensity In-Season Tournament games to regular-season games in December can be a challenge for a team. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham stressed, though, that he expects his team to be ready to go in Dallas on Tuesday.

Like we handle our business all the time,” Ham said of how his Lakers team will prepare. “We just stay locked in step, keep our rhythm together, understand that no matter what, we have to be the most competitive, together, accountable team on the floor, and then within that realm, we have to bring the energy, the effort and the discipline. This is a great source of positive stimuli for us with this group, trying to come together with guys coming from being inactive to being active and being in rhythm, the continuity, and also the heightened awareness because we’re playing an In-Season Tournament.

I think just everyone being able to have their competitive spirit revealed, and people, their comrades, to see their competitive spirits was a huge shot in the arm for us. Our group needed this, and we needed to win this. If it goes the other way, then you try to rationalize whatever, but the fact that we were able to come here and do what we did — obviously, it was a lopsided game here in the semifinal game, but Indiana put up a great fight. Indiana put up a good fight—a young, up-and-coming ballclub. But we needed this. We’ll be okay, man. We’ll be okay, trust me.”

Tuesday was a tough test for the Lakers against one of the best teams in the Western Conference, the Mavericks, although Dallas was missing some key pieces. Kyrie Irving (right heel contusion), Derrick Jones Jr. (left quad contusion), Josh Green (right elbow sprain), and Maxi Kleber (right small toe dislocation) were ruled out.

Additionally, Luka Doncic (low back contusion) and Tim Hardaway Jr. (back spasms) were dealing with injuries of their own and were considered questionable, although they were expected to play.

The Lakers had three questionable players: LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Jarred Vanderbilt, although the first two were playing. Vanderbilt was out for L.A. with low back spasms, however.

While not quite an In-Season Tournament hangover, the Lakers struggled to find a rhythm offensively early and fell to the Dallas Mavericks 127-125 on Tuesday night.

Anthony Davis was far and away the best player for the Lakers, finishing the game with 37 points and 11 rebounds. LeBron James had a slow start but still ended with 33 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists in 40 minutes of play. Austin Reaves had 22 points with seven assists and five rebounds.

Dallas now holds the tiebreaker over Los Angeles for playoff positioning, which could have long-term ramifications if the Western Conference standings remain as tight as they currently are.

Lakers vs Suns First Quarter:

It was the start of the Lakers vs Mavericks in the first quarter.

The opening minutes were promising for the Lakers. Davis was attacking the basket and protected the rim with a nice chase-down block, establishing his dominance as he usually does on the defensive side of the ball.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, Dallas’ potent offense came into play, and the Mavericks still ended the quarter with 34 points and an eight-point advantage.

The remainder of the first half was an offensive struggle for the Lakers as they had trouble getting open looks or easy baskets early in the shot clock. Dallas went on an 8-0 run midway through the second quarter, and their lead ballooned to 13.

The team may have been struggling, but Davis kept putting the ball in the hoop. The Lakers went on a 7-0 run of their own, but a Tim Harawady Jr. corner three, part of the 12 threes the Mavericks made in the first, put an end to a Lakers comeback.

The most impactful aspect of the half, however, was the strain on Davis’ body. He had an early second-quarter moment where he started showing distress in his groin, a consistent point of pain for AD this season.

Turnovers continued to haunt the Lakers as it led to easy looks for the Mavericks, who remained red-hot from 3. The Lakers scored six straight towards the end of the half to stay in it but still went into the locker room trailing 71-61.

Davis was hobbling around with what appeared to be a groin issue towards the end of the first half, although he was back in there to start the third quarter. It was James who was getting it done for L.A. early in the third quarter on both ends, though, and after he made a triple and then Davis made a baby hook, the deficit was down to five, with Jason Kidd needing a timeout.

The Lakers made another run to close the third quarter, giving them their first lead since the opening minutes. Davis was instrumental with five straight points, including a triple to beat the buzzer to put his team ahead 95-93 going into the fourth.

James scored to begin the fourth quarter to extend the run to 10-0 before Grant Williams and Dante Exum buried triples to end it.

Doncic, Hardaway, James, and Davis continued to lead their respective teams, trading buckets with the game being tied at 108 midway through the fourth quarter. After a pair of Lakers turnovers, though, Dallas rattled off five quick points as Exum stayed hot from deep.

While Doncic was great, as advertised, it was the Mavericks’ other guys like Hardaway, Exum, and Williams that continued to be a thorn in the Lakers’ side.

Prince was the same thing for Dallas as he hit yet another triple to get the Lakers back within four going into the final two minutes. The Lakers again left Exum wide open, though, and he made them pay with another corner triple.

The Lakers couldn’t respond from there and would go on to suffer the  125-127 loss.
