The Los Angeles Lakers improved to 26-25 after snapping the New York Knicks’ nine-game winning streak, 113-105. The Lakers are now 3-2 on their six-game road trip.

We’re just trying to get to a place where we’re trying to get to a place where we’re playing the type of basketball we envisioned,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “The type of basketball we know we’re capable of and defend at a high, high level. We’ve got enough firepower in terms of people in the starting lineup, people coming off the bench to where we’re (going to) be able to put points on the board.”

LeBron James led the way with 24 points (10-of-19 FGs, 2-of-5 3s), five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

It’s the Mecca of basketball,” James said of New York. “There’s been so many great players, great teams, great things that come through this building. So (I’m) just happy to be part of it.”

Following up key performances, Anthony Davis had 12 points (4-of-12 FGs), 18 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. D’Angelo Russell and Taurean Prince combined for 32 points (11-of-24 FGs, 5-of-13 3s).

Tonight was the first time playing in Madison Square Garden for Austin Reaves, who missed the games there in his rookie and sophomore seasons, and Reaves showed out with 22 points (6-of-13 FGs, 3-of-6 3s, 7-of-8 FTs), six rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks

For the Knicks, Jalen Brunson exploded for 36 points (15-of-31 FGs, 1-of-6 3s, 5-of-6 FTs), six rebounds, and ten assists, while Donte DiVincenzo put up 26 points (10-of-22 FGs, 6-of-10 3s), six rebounds, and four assists, and Josh Hart finished with 12 points (5-of-16 FGs, 2-of-6 3s), 11 rebounds, and four assists.

We didn’t make enough plays on both sides of the ball,” Brunson said. “Give them credit.”

Jumpers weren’t falling early on, as the Lakers were 0-of-5 from 3, and the Knicks were 0-of-6. The game was all tied at ten after six minutes.

Davis, who hadn’t played since Monday, was out of rhythm on offense, starting just 1-of-5 from the field. However, he already had nine rebounds, three assists, and one block.

Los Angeles led 25-20 after Russell’s 3-pointer gave him 10 points. The Lakers led by as many as five in the first quarter, with the Knicks closing on a 5-2 run to close the gap to 27-25.

Both teams struggled from the field; Los Angeles was 38.5 percent (3-of-11 from 3), and New York was 37.9 percent (3-of-12 from 3). There was only one turnover for the Lakers (they had only seven at Boston) and two for the Knicks.

Jarred Vanderbilt’s absence was felt in the first half. New York already had nine offensive rebounds (one of their strengths, to be fair), and it wasn’t even halftime yet. Los Angeles also used Taurean Prince as a POA (Point of Attack) defender on Brunson, but it wasn’t going well.

Los Angeles led for much of the first half but went into the halftime break tied at 59. Russell had 14 points and three assists, while Davis had eight points and 11 rebounds. Brunson (17 points) was shredding the Lakers.

Lakers vs Knicks Third Quarter:

Two ridiculous blocks from Davis started a fast break that ended in Reaves drawing a fourth foul on DiVincenzo, who had five made triples so far for the Knicks. Los Angeles was back within one at 76-75 after Reaves converted at the charity stripe. They had trailed by seven moments earlier.

It was a concerning third period for the Lakers, who managed only 21 points to New York’s 27 and trail 86-80 with 12 minutes left to play. Davis was 4-for-10, Reaves 2-for-8, and Russell 5-for-14. The most significant issue for Los Angeles was defensive rebounding. The Knicks were up 13-3 on the offensive glass. Both teams shot under 34 percent on 3s.

Flipping things around from the last quarter, it was a great start to the fourth for the Lakers, with a James layup through traffic and a transition three from Prince after Jaxson Hayes picked off a pass.

Despite a few miscues in transition in the last minute, Los Angeles outscored the Knicks 20-10 in the fourth period to take a 100-96 lead with 5:40 left.

A three-point play from Prince started Los Angeles’ game-clinching 11-0 run, capped by James’ fadeaway jumper for a 105-96 lead with 1:54 left.

The Lakers held the Knicks to just 10 points. New York was just 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) from the floor. Los Angeles’ trapping and backline rotations were impressive this quarter.

The Los Angeles Lakers will now take on the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, January 27th, at 5:30 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
