The Los Angeles Lakers staved off the Charlotte Hornets’ comeback, 124-118, to finish the road trip 4-2. They improve to 27-25 on the season, marking the first time they’ve been two games over .500 since December 28th, 2023.

Anthony Davis was the impact player for the Lakers, finishing with his third career triple-double, 26 points (12-of-16 FGs, 0-of-2 3s), 15 rebounds, 11 assists, and three blocks.

We’ve been doing a good job at playing complete team basketball,” Davis said.

He’s seen just about everything,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said of the double teams Davis has faced and beaten. “Just the film study, the breakdowns we go through, him being vocal, him being communicative in terms of what he’s seeing, and where he needs guys to be positioned so he can I need you to take money out of your account or not my order make the right reads. He’s been doing all the homework he needs to do, and so that’s why you see the top results.”

Routing out stats for Los Angeles, D’Angelo Russell had another great showing with 28 points (10-of-21 FGs, 5-of-12 3s), four rebounds, and six assists, and LeBron James had 26 points (12-of-22 FGs, 0-of-5 3s), four rebounds, and seven assists.

When we put our minds to it, we can beat any team in this league,” Davis said. “We lost two we felt like we should have won, and we won two that the people in Nevada thought we should lose. When we buckle down defensively and play the right way, we are a tough team to beat.”

For the Hornets, Miles Bridges played out of his mind, totaling 41 points (16-of-26 FGs, 5-of-10 3s, 4-of-4 FTs), the rookie Brandon Miller was eccentric, finishing with 33 points (13-of-25 FGs, 5-of-11 3s) and four steals, and PJ Washington had 15 points (6-of-14 FGs, 1-of-5 3s), and eight rebounds off the bench.

Miller became the first Hornets rookie to score at least 30 points in back-to-back games.

I think that shows a lot of confidence,” Miller said. “Hats off to my teammates for coming in every day and building my confidence to take the shots that I take in tough matchups like this with the crowd going. It’s really all my teammates, not just me. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t take those shots.”

Lakers vs Hornets First Quarter:

The Lakers were up 20-17 into the first time out, despite a quick Hornets start to the game that had them up seven points early.

It wasn’t Los Angeles’ best defensive first period on the sixth game of a six-game trip, but they scored the ball with relative ease, taking a 37-29 lead into the second, with eight points from Davis to go with nine from Russell.

The second overall pick, Miller (age 21), who’s played very well of late and scored eight points in the first quarter, had his first chance to defend James. James backed him under the hoop, waited for help to come, up-faked, and rose for a seven-foot jumper. Los Angeles was up 10, time out Hornets.

With a ton of Lakers jerseys in the crowd, James was up to three dunks, the latest coming on the seventh assist from Davis in transition. Lakers up 66-48.

At halftime, the Lakers led 74-58. Los Angeles outscored Charlotte 37-29 in both the first and second quarters. Russell already had 22 points on 8-of-14 FGs. Davis had 12 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

Lakers vs Hornets Third Quarter:

Rough final two minutes of the third period for Los Angeles, as Charlotte hit three triples, and the Lakers managed just a Christian Wood tip-in of his miss, as the Hornets trimmed a 21-point Laker lead to 14 at 100-86 with 12 minutes to play.

The Lakers were in a prevent-defense mode for much of the fourth period, trying to hold off Charlotte and get on a plane back to Los Angeles. Bridges (39 points) and Miller (33) had the Hornets within four with 40 seconds to play and the ball.

However, Davis sealed the win and a 4-2 road trip by blocking Bridges, leading to two free throws from Austin Reaves, then clearing a defensive board on the next trip and hitting two charity shots himself.

The Los Angeles Lakers will now take on the Denver Nuggets on Thursday, February 8th, at 7:00 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
