The Lakers have really been struggling in recent weeks, falling below .500 on the season at 17-18 heading into play Friday night after a disappointing loss to the Miami Heat.

They looked to get back on track when they hosted the Memphis Grizzlies, but the losing streak was extended to four as the Lakers fell 127-113.

The  Lakers’ play of late has led to speculation about head coach Darvin Ham’s job security.

Before Friday’s game against the Grizzlies, Ham was asked if he was angered by the reports surrounding the team. He took that opportunity to compare anonymous sources to the Witness Protection Program.

Buckle up cause this is a ride of a quote.

Nah, man. It comes with the territory,Ham said. “I’m solid. My governor, Jeanie Buss, the boss lady, our president, Robert Pelinka, we’re all aligned. As long as they’re not saying it, I guess I’m good, which I know how they feel about me and the situation we’re currently in. We’re all on the same page. My two captains, our communication has been at a high level.”

The one thing that’s crazy is that it reminds me of when I used to watch 60 Minutes with my father in the ‘80s, and one particular show, they were talking about La Cosa Nostra and the mafia, and guys are starting to go to trial. The star witness shows up with a black potato sack over his head and shades due to fear. The name really can’t be released. This seems the standard of reporting now for NBA, people on the internet, and whatever,” Ham continued. “Not all reporters. I don’t want to disrespect anybody in the room,” he continued. “But when you say the source is anonymous by choice and they don’t want to put their name on something, but they want to give you the information, and then you take that information, and now everybody gets a chance to dissect it and spread it all out in their own way, it’s kind of disingenuous, and I wish we get to a place where people are firm enough to stand on what they’re saying and then maybe we can have real dialogue and get to it.”

I don’t mind people critiquing the job I’m doing. All I’m going to do is keep my head down and continue to do my job until I can’t do it anymore. Just be solid with what you’re putting out there, and please don’t intertwine it with personal attacks either,Ham said. “So, that’s what it is. That’s what I signed up for when I decided to become a coach—been around some great guys who handled it well and some coaches that haven’t handled it so well. Me? I’m solid. I’ve been through a ton of ‘ish’ in my life, and this is a walk in the park. Trust me.”

After Friday’s loss to Memphis, Lakers fans will continue to be on Ham Watch 2024.

Lakers vs Grizzlies First Quarter:

The Lakers went with the same starting lineup as their last game and got off to another slow offensive start because LeBron James got the crowd going with a thunderous dunk. Anthony Davis then got going inside, and Austin Reaves had a three-point play to tie the game at 12 going into the first timeout.

James then got going from deep with back-to-back triples, although Ja Morant immediately responded with a quick three-point play, and then Marcus Smart buried a triple of his own. James didn’t stop there, though, as he made two more 3-pointers to give him four in a row for the Lakers.

That got the Lakers going as Davis had a couple of nice buckets inside, and then Jarred Vanderbilt stole an inbounds pass, leading to another bucket. Luckily for the Grizzlies, Morant beat the buzzer to cut their deficit to 38-29 at the end of the first.

The Lakers picked things up defensively in the second quarter, allowing them to get out in transition with James finishing and then Taurean Prince making a 3. L.A.’s double-digit lead quickly dwindled to just five, though, with the Grizzlies hitting a few triples of their own.

Davis restored order for the Lakers with a three-point play, and then Prince connected on another triple. Marcus Smart, who before this game had missed his last 13 three-pointers, knocked down five of eight in the first half to help keep the Grizzlies within reach. A Desmond Bane 3-pointer brought them within two with two minutes left in the half.

The Grizzlies got hot against the Lakers to end the half, though, to cut their deficit to 59-58 going into the locker room.

The Grizzlies came out hot in the third quarter, quickly taking the lead away from the Lakers. Jaren Jackson Jr. played a big role in that with a pair of triples and a block on defense.

There was a wild sequence midway through the third where James and Jackson were battling for a loose ball, with the Lakers coming up with it. Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins was furious that nothing was called in favor of his team and ran out into the court in anger. Prince had the ball right in front of him and smartly ran into the court to force a technical foul, although no ejection was handed out.

That seemed to spark the Lakers as they got going offensively again to regain the lead. Morant got hot to end the quarter, however, tying the game at 94 going into the fourth.

The Grizzlies heated up again to begin the fourth, taking a five-point lead and forcing a Lakers timeout.

Davis returned out of the timeout and immediately got the Lakers back on track with a quick bucket followed by three Reaves points to tie the game.

That was immediately responded by an 11-2 Memphis run, though, putting L.A. in another hole.

James missed four costly free throws, and the Grizzlies stayed hot from 3, getting their lead back to 10. The Lakers had no answer from there and would go on to suffer the loss.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be the visitors as they take on the Clippers on Sunday, January 7th, at 6:30 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
