The Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Los Angeles Clippers for the first time this season, 127-116, without LeBron James to fall to 22-23. The Lakers remain the ninth seed in the West.

D’Angelo Russell continued his resurgence with 27 points (9-of-21 FGs, 4-of-10 3s, 5-of-6 FTs), 10 assists, and five rebounds. Anthony Davis had 26 points (12 of 20 FGs) and 12 rebounds.

This game marked Russell’s first 25-point, 10-assist game as a member of the Lakers (counting both stints). Also, in the fourth straight game, he’s scored 20 points, his longest streak since December 2022.

He’s just being aggressive,” Jarred Vanderbilt said of Russell. “An aggressive DLo is good for everybody. We’re gonna continue encouraging him to be aggressive.”

For the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard ran rampant, acquiring his second career triple-double with 25 points (11 of 16 FGs), 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals.

Everybody contributed to the win,” Leonard said. “That’s what we got to do, knock down shots when they’re open, and tonight we did.”

James Harden followed suit with 23 points (8-of-17 FGs, 4-of-8 3s) and ten assists, Paul George totaled 17 points (8-of-12 FGs) and five rebounds, and Russell Westbrook had 16 points (6-of-11 FGs, 3-of-3 3s), six rebounds, and two steals.

I’m not ever gonna shy away from the competition of trying to compete and get stops,” Austin Reaves said of guarding the Clippers’ stars. “You tip your cap to them for the made shots and go try to score on the other end.”

The Clippers held a 35-29 lead at the end of the first quarter. Davis had 10 points, while Russell had six points.

The Lakers’ offense was potent thus far, as they converted 18-of-31 FGs (and 8-of-12 FTs) for 49 points with six minutes left in the second period. However, the Clippers’ offense was even better, hitting 24-of-40 FGs (62.5 percent) for 58 points to claim a nine-point lead.

James spent a lot of time on Leonard in their last meeting between these two teams, which was won by the Lakers, and helped hold Leonard to 6 of 17 FGs. Without James in this one, Leonard started 7-for-7 from the field.

Lakers vs Clippers Second Quarter:

At halftime, the Clippers held a 77-64 lead. The Lakers defense got shredded. The Clippers shot 66 percent and 50 percent on 3s. Despite that, the Lakers kept relatively close with free throws. Davis and Russell combined for 33 points thus far.

The Lakers trailed by 16 late in the second quarter but battled back to within six points at 88-82 midway through the third period. Russell and Davis combined for 44 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way.

At the end of three quarters, the Clippers’ lead dwindled to 106-97 as the Lakers outscored the Clippers 33-29 in the third quarter.

Despite Davis having 26 points and ten rebounds and Russell having 25 points, five rebounds, and eight assists, the Clippers were still shooting 62.9 percent overall and 54.5 percent on 3s to stay in front.

It was a huge momentum swing for the Lakers as Russell stuffed Harden in transition, preventing an easy basket. The Lakers used that to push the ball the other way, and Taurean Prince got a layup.

Ultimately, the Lakers couldn’t overcome the absence of James, as they were outscored in the fourth, 21-19, and fell for the first time this season to the Clippers.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham said James is “day to day” moving forward. They’re trying to be proactive with his health. The Lakers are now 2-3 in the games he’s missed.

It’s a different dynamic with him not being out there,” Leonard said of James. “You saw guys came in and step up and make big shots for him.”

The Los Angeles Lakers will now take on the Chicago Bulls on Thursday, January 25th, at 7:30 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
