The Lakers have been struggling since they won the NBA In-Season Tournament and were looking to stop their downward spiral and grab a much-needed win against the hot Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night.

The Lakers had lost four straight games coming into Sunday’s game, while the Clippers had won 14 of their last 16. Those streaks ended as the Lakers came away with a 106-103 victory.

LeBron James led the way with 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists for the Lakers. Anthony Davis, who had a slow start to the game, got it going in the second half. He ended the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals.

Former UNLV Runnin’ Rebel Christian Wood once again took advantage of his playing time. Wood did a little bit of everything, including two highlight dunks against the Clippers. The former UNLV star ended the game with 9 points and ten rebounds. D’Angelo Russell bounced back from a slow start in the first half to come alive in the second half and finish with 13 points and six assists.

Clippers head coach Ty Lue also had a head-scratching moment for Clippers fans. With under 3 minutes left in the game, he took out Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers star didn’t return to the game, which was surprising since it was a close game.

The Lakers finished off their across-the-hall rivals and left Crypto.com Arena with a 106-103 win.

Taurean Prince started the scoring with a triple for the Lakers, but Paul George responded with a pair of buckets for the Clippers. As has been the case a lot lately, the Lakers struggled to take care of the ball early, which caused the Lakers’ offense to go stagnant. The Clippers capitalized to take a 16-7 lead.

James got the Lakers back on track out of a timeout with a three-pointer, and then Prince finished a smooth layup.

With two minutes left in the 1st quarter, the Lakers gained some momentum as the Clippers went on a scoring drought. A quick 10-1 run had the Lakers within one. D’Angelo Russell returned for the Lakers after a three-game absence and made an impact with a block and an assist. But the Clippers answered right back and led 24-19 at the end of the first quarter.

A surge from James helped the Lakers get to within one to start the second quarter. Wood and Max Christie continued to be productive with the minutes they’ve been given lately. A 3-pointer from Wood brought the Lakers within one.

Russell struggled by missing his first four shots before finally making a layup. Unfortunately, Wood was called for a Flagrant one foul on a reckless closeout on Norman Powell, giving the Clippers an advantage. James Harden and Ivica Zubac did a lot of the work offensively for the Clippers, while the Lakers continued to turn the ball over.

Zubac had an excellent first half, scoring 14 points against his former team. Austin Reaves finally got involved when he drew an and-one on George. The Lakers managed to keep the game close, but the Clippers led 53-49 at halftime.

LeBron James got the crowd into it early in the third quarter, tying the game with back-to-back three-point plays, including a thunderous poster dunk on George. The pace of this game favored the Lakers heavily to keep them in it.

Cam Reddish heated up from there, hitting a pair of triples to give the Lakers the lead. The Clippers responded with a run, although Russell finally came alive off the bench. Russell found his rhythm and knocked down two in a row to give the Lakers a two-point lead.

Wood then had a big block and two monster dunks for the Lakers, extending their lead to 81-77 at the end of the third.

The Lakers extended their lead to eight to start the fourth quarter. Anthony Davis‘ offensive game was slow tonight, but the rest of the team was picking up the slack. Russell’s 3-pointer gave the Lakers a 10-point lead. But two Norman Powell 3-pointers helped cut the Lakers lead back down to one.

With three minutes left, the Lakers were holding on to their one-point lead. Anthony Davis drilled a midrange jumper to bring the Lakers‘ lead back up to three. But Powell came right back and nailed three free throws to tie the game with two minutes left after a Taurean Prince foul. Prince immediately made up for it by draining a 3-pointer, and a LeBron James layup got the Lakers up by five before Harden answered back with a 3-pointer of his own to make it a two-point game.

Then the Clippers entered desperation mode and were left having to foul for the rest of the game. After a Zubac layup, Austin Reaves had a chance to do the same, but he could only convert on one of the two free throws. That gave Powell a look at the buzzer, which went in and out, and the Lakers came away with the 106-103 win.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be at home as they take on the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, January 10th, at 7:00 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
