The Los Angeles Lakers finished their 10-game home stretch 6-4. They improved to 23-23 overall after defeating the Chicago Bulls 141-132. They’re now 6-6 in 2024 (two of the losses came on the road and without LeBron James). They’ll now embark on a six-game road trip.

D’Angelo Russell led the way with 29 points (10-of-18 FGs, 8-of-13 3s) and four assists.

He’s hungry,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said of Russell. “He’s playing at a high level, it’s beautiful to watch. A tear like this, we’ve needed all of it.”

Over the last seven games, Russell has averaged 27.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game.

I just try to complement LeBron and AD,” Russell said. “If that’s me shooting, facilitating, whatever that may be. I think the aggression is allowing me to have some success.”

James totaled 25 points (10-of-19 FGs, 3-of-4 3s), 12 assists, and two steals, while Anthony Davis finished with 22 points (10-of-18 FGs, 2-of-5 FTs), 11 rebounds, and six assists, and Austin Reaves chipped in 20 points (7-of-9 FGs, 2-of-3 3s) and eight assists.

However, there was another Laker that Russell tried to shift the attention to.

Make sure y’all give Vando some love,” Russell said. “He played his ass off tonight.”

Jarred Vanderbilt stepped up in this one, as Vando had 17 points (8-of-11 FGs), five rebounds, and three steals.

I mean, it’s the Vando we grew accustomed to when we got him last year,” James said of Vanderbilt. “The injuries put a hurting on him early in the season, but he’s getting back into form, and that’s the Vando we’ve been missing.”

As for the Bulls, DeMar DeRozan was impressive, totaling 32 points (10-of-14 FGs, 11-of-12 FTs), 10 assists, and two steals, Coby White popped off for 25 points (8-of-18 FGs, 3-of-10 3s, 6-of-7 FTs) and seven rebounds, and Nikola Vucevic had 20 points (9-of-12 FGs, 2-of-3 3s) and eight rebounds.

We certainly dug ourselves a hole,” Chicago coach Billy Donovan said. “The difference in the game was the foul line for them. We fouled them too much. They shot astronomically well. The turnovers, and the close of the second quarter, really hurt.”

Alex Caruso shot 42 percent from 3 heading into this contest and was left open for a pair of early makes that helped Chicago to a 10-8 early lead. He also hit 3-of-4 3s in Chicago’s home win over the Lakers earlier in the season, when they hit 18 as a team.

At the end of the first period, it was a high-scoring affair, with the Bulls coming out on top 32-31. Reaves led Los Angeles with six points. The Lakers shot 46.2 percent overall and 50 percent on 3s. Davis struggled from the floor (2-of-8) and free throw line (1-of-3). Meanwhile, DeRozan was already working with 11 points.

Lakers vs Bulls Second Quarter:

Vanderbilt started his strong individual play early, already with 11 points (5-of-5 FGs) to lead the Lakers , who led 47-43 after his steal and dunk. Vanderbilt didn’t hit double figures until his 23rd game this season but has three times in his last four as he’s gotten back to full health.

The Bulls (especially Andre Drummond) hurt the Lakers on the offensive glass, already with an 8-3 edge, and an 11-0 advantage in second-chance points. Despite that, a quick 8-0 run by Los Angeles had the home team up 55-45.

At halftime, the Lakers took the reins of this game, with a lead of 73-57. Los Angeles outscored Chicago 42-25 in the second quarter, closing the quarter on a 12-0 run. Vanderbilt already had a season-high 13 points.

Lakers vs Bulls Third Quarter:

Russell had 14 of the Lakers 30 points in the third quarter. He continued his tear, scoring 26 points to nearly match his average (27.2) over the past two games with 15 minutes still left in the game.

Russell, a maker of eight 3s already, nearly hit a 3/4 court bomb to close the third quarter, which would have tied his career-high of nine 3s. Only Kobe Bryant and James have made at least nine 3s in Lakers history, with Bryant’s 12 the only game of 10+.

Lakers vs Bulls Fourth Quarter:

The Lakers finished this game two 3-pointers shy of their franchise high of 22 made 3s.

An interesting tidbit, as only two free throws tonight for James. On the season, he’s averaging a career-low 5.6 per game. In January, he has averaged just 4.9.

The Los Angeles Lakers will now take on the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, January 27th, at 5:30 pm PST. Thank you for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news.
