The Golden Knights took on the Minnesota Wild Friday night inside T-Mobile Arena with a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win.

Not only did the Golden Knights get a massive 7-2 win against the Wild, securing a playoff berth, but they also got some great news off the ice regarding a couple of players.

First, VGK captain Mark Stone returned to practice Friday, as he wore a no-contact jersey as he started his journey back to the lineup before the playoffs.

Stone injured his spleen on February 20, appearing in 56 games this season. When he’s been in the lineup, he’s contributed 16 goals and 37 assists for 56 points. He has been a two-way menace and shutdown forward in the defensive zone.

Next, the Golden Knights signed defenseman Noah Hanifin to an eight-year deal worth $7.35 million per season. Hanifin has appeared in 17 games since his acquisition from the Calgary Flames at the NHL Trade Deadline.

Lastly, the Golden Knights had business to take care of on Friday night, and they did just that. Chandler Stephenson tallied four assists as the Golden Knights sealed a spot in the 2024 NHL Playoffs with a 7-2 victory against the Wild.

Jack Eichel, Nicolas Roy, and Pavel Dorofeyev all had a goal and an assist. Tomas Hertl scored his first goal as a Golden Knight, while William Karlsson and Keegan Kolesar also scored. Jonathan Marchessault also added his team-leading 42nd goal of the season.

Logan Thompson made 25 saves in the win.

There’s no doubt this is something they want to do. They want an opportunity to repeat as Stanley Cup champions,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “So I think the process of getting here had some ups and downs this year. I mean, we’re all dealing with, you know, what’s the appropriate way to go about our business throughout the year and set ourselves up.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first period, and that was exactly what they needed to do in a critical game. Roy started the scoring for VGK with his first career short-handed goal at the end of a 3-on-1 break, tapping in a pass from Eichel.

Dorofeyev followed Roy’s goal with his 13th goal. He found the back of the net with a wrist shot from near the left faceoff dot that bounced in off Fleury’s blocker. Jack Eichel gave the Golden Knights a 3-0 lead with a power-play goal, his 30th goal of the season.

The Wild cut the VGK lead to 3-1 midway through the second period. Khusnutdinov redirected Brock Faber’s point shot under Thompson’s left arm.

But the Golden Knights answered back. Marchessault made it 4-1 with another VGK power-play goal, one-timing a Stephenson pass for his team-leading 42nd goal.

Hertl scored his 16th goal and first with the Golden Knights early in the third period to extend the lead to 5-1. Hartman then cut the deficit to three goals on a delayed penalty with his 20th goal, which deflected off the stick of Hanifin.

Karlsson was left alone in front of the crease and answered with his 28th goal, one-timing a shot five-hole. Kolesar ended the scoring with his eighth goal.

The VGK win, combined with Carolina’s 5-2 victory at St. Louis earlier Friday, eliminated the Blues from playoff consideration and put the Golden Knights into the playoffs for the sixth time in their seven-year history.

The Golden Knights are back home to take on the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, April 14th, at 12:30 p.m. Thanks for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
