Vegas Golden Knights (41-25-8)  | Minnesota Wild (35-28-10)

It was the Golden Knights vs Wild on Saturday afternoon in Minnesota. The Golden Knights bounced back after a tough loss on Tuesday to beat a good Winnipeg Jets team 4-1.

On Saturday, the Golden Knights took on the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center. The Golden Knights defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1 and have now picked up points in each of their last six games played.

Minnesota badly needed the extra point, so they again pulled their goalie in overtime, effectively pushing all their chips to the middle of the table. If a team pulls their goalie in overtime, they do not get the loser points.

We talked after the third period that they may pull their goalie, and sure enough, it landed on Jonathan Money Marchessault’s stick,” said coach Bruce Cassidy, who had a little chirp for his winger, too, saying now he’ll probably want to be on the penalty kill and “get Selke votes.”

It was a near-perfect road trip for the Golden Knights. With their playoff position teetering after a run of bad luck, injuries, and try-hard losses, the Golden Knights won three of four games and earned points in all four games on their road trip through the Central Division.

Golden Knights vs Wild First and Second Periods:

The Golden Knights and Wild played to a 0-0 tie for all of the first and most of the second period, and the Wild broke through on the power play while Vegas was killing off a five-minute major taken by Jack Eichel. The Golden Knights’ forward was ejected from the game after taking a spearing penalty, and Kirill Kaprizov, the player Eichel “jabbed” at, got Minnesota on the board.

Minnesota scored on the resulting power play, as the hockey gods enjoyed a little bit of poetic justice. Minnesota forward Matt Bouldy danced around the Golden Knights penalty killers at the blue line and shoveled a backhand pass to Kaprizov at full speed. Kaprizov deked Golden Knights Logan Thompson for the first goal.

To give up only one, you’re still in the game,Cassidy said. “You’re at the end of a road trip, and you have to dig down a little. We did. We’re a winning team for a reason.

The Golden Knights entered the final period trailing 1-0 and could not break through until there was 6:17 left in regulation, and Michael Amadio picked up his 13th goal of the season to give the team much-needed life.

Both sides were kept off the board for the remainder of the period and entered overtime in search of a second point.

What happened next was rare, as the Wild pulled goaltender Filip Gustavsson while they had possession of the puck in the 3-on-3 overtime. Minnesota is desperate for points as they try to keep their playoff hopes alive, but it backfired when Jonathan Marchessault buried the 160-foot shot into the empty net for the game-winner at 3:30 of overtime.

The Wild forfeited the point they earned in regulation because the goal was scored with the goaltender pulled, and it was a risk they were okay with taking because they had previously done this against Nashville Predators and scored to win the game 4-3 in OT.

Thompson was amazing for the second start in a row and was named the game’s No. 1 star after making 32 saves. Marchessault’s empty-net goal was his 40th overall goal this season, and he became the second player in team history to score at least 40 goals in a single season. William Karlsson currently holds the team record with 43 goals in a single season, which was set in the team’s inaugural season.

The Golden Knights are back at home to take on the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, April 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. Thanks for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
