Franchise Sports Media

Vegas Golden Knights (21-6-5)  |  Ottawa Senators (11-15-0)

It was the Golden Knights vs Senators Sunday in T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights got the 6-3 win, but now have to worry about their goaltending situation as Adin Hill exits with an undisclosed injury.

The Golden Knights needed to play their game. Multiple VGK players and coach Bruce Cassidy felt the Golden Knights abandoned their game on Friday night against the Sabres. Puck management and clean breakout passes would be two areas of focus for the Golden Knights heading into Sunday’s game. The Golden Knights didn’t need their best game to beat the Senators, they needed to play a smarter game.

The Golden Knights looked to secure six of a possible eight points on the four-game homestand before they headed east next week. It has not been a pretty homestand as the Golden Knights have given up third-period leads in three straight games. VGK players and coach Cassidy mentioned the team has been finding ways to win all season when the Golden Knights have not been at their best. The homestand had been just the opposite, the team found a way to lose Friday against the Sabres and nearly found ways to lose against the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames.

Alec Martinez and Adin Hill returned to action vs the Senators, to the joy of VGK fans. More on Hill later.

The Senators are in last place in the Atlantic Division and entered Sunday’s game on a three-game losing streak. This was the middle stop of a five-game road trip that has featured losses against the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars. Tim Stutzle leads the Senators with 28 points. Brady Tkachuk entered the game with 69 penalty minutes and is not afraid to mix it up with anyone, including his former teammate, Mark Stone.

Golden Knights fans at T-Mobile Arena had some excitement before the puck dropped. Adin Hill walked down the tunnel the eruption of fans excited to see his first appearance since Nov. 30.

Unfortunately, Hill’s return was short-lived.

Josh Norris of the Ottawa Senators scored a powerplay goal 6:25 into the first period. The shot was low and ricocheted off Hill’s left pad and into the net. Hill did not react to the shot and it seemed like he just lost the puck in traffic.

Hill skated to the bench immediately and removed himself from the game. Logan Thompson came in relief of Hill.

The scene at T-Mobile Arena was similar to what Thompson experienced last season. Thompson made a start against the Nashville Predators and reaggravated an injury.

Hill had injury issues and was limited to 27 appearances last season which was also a career high.

Jack Eichel wasted little time getting the Golden Knights on the board. Eichel beat Joonas Korpisalo on a two-on-one just a minute and a half into the game.

Ridley Greig gave the Senators the lead on the powerplay with a shot from between the circles that beat Thompson. Jonathan Marchessault tied the game on a long wrist shot from just inside the blue line.

The second period also featured high-event hockey and thankfully, it was in favor of the Golden Knights. Ben Hutton found Nic Roy streaking across the blue line on the power play and Roy was able to finish.

Chandler Stephenson scored a shorthanded goal less than two minutes later. Stone found Stephenson streaking down the middle of the ice and there was not much Korpisalo could have done.

Ivan Barbashev scored with just 12 seconds remaining for his 10th point in nine games. “I think that line was playing well and just not finishing.Golden Knights Coach Bruce Cassidy on Mark Stone joining the line with Barbashev and Eichel. “They are just good players that will come around. Barbashev I do find to be at the front of the net more.”

The Golden Knights were a bit shell-shocked after Hill left the game and gained their composure in the second period.

We had a good effort after the first period of playing pucks behind (the Senators’s defense),Stone on the victory. “We played the game we wanted to play, we did not trade chances.”

William Karlsson scored a Golden Knights powerplay goal five minutes into the third period. Brady Tkachuk got a garbage goal with just over a minute remaining to make for a 6-3 Golden Knights victory.

The bigger story was the other VGK goalie, Logan Thompson. Thompson appeared to favor his right leg and was slow to get up.

I’m sure he’ll be okay,Golden Knights captain Mark Stone told reporters when asked about Hill. “He’ll get right back to work tomorrow to try and get back in the lineup. Definitely not worried about him. LT came in and played really well for us and got us the win.”
