The Golden Knights returned home in Las Vegas to take on the Red Wings on Saturday night at T-Moblile Arena. Jonathan Marchessault scored his eighth hat trick of his career to lead VGK to a 5-3 win over Detroit in front of an excited home crowd and snapped a 4-game losing streak.

It was the first game since the conclusion of the NHL Trade deadline, where VGK made a huge splash, and the crowd was amped. The Golden Knights made a blockbuster trade minutes before the deadline ended at 3 pm. In a surprise, Golden Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon acquired talented forward Tomas Hertl from the San Jose Sharks.

The Golden Knights acquired the top defenseman on the market when McCrimmon moved his chips into the middle of the table for Noah Hanifin on Wednesday, meaning the Golden Knight’s trade deadline included the acquisitions of Anthony Mantha, who has 20 goals this season, Hanifin, and now Hertl, who is in the second year of an eight-year, $65.1 million contract with an $8.137 million salary cap hit. VGK is all in for another run at the Stanley Cup.

The Golden Knights traded top prospect David Edstrom (their 2023 first-round pick), a first-round pick in 2025, and third-round picks in 2025 and 2027 for the talented Hertl.

Hertl had knee surgery in early February. He elected to have the procedure earlier in the season so that he could return for the end, and now that end will be with the Golden Knights.

Pavel Dorofeyev opened the scoring for the Golden Knights midway through the 1st period to give VGK a 1-0.

Five minutes later, Jonathan Marchessault scored his 33rd goal of the season and his first of the game, giving the Golden Knights a 2-0 advantage.

With less than 30 seconds to go in the frame, Detroit cut the Golden Knights’ lead in half when Michael Rasmussen scored a goal for Detroit to cut the Golden Knights lead in half to 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

The second period failed to see either team score, but it set up an action-packed third period.

The Golden Knights committed a costly hooking penalty less than a minute into the final frame, which the Red Wings took advantage of. Detroit found the equalizer before their power play expired to even the score 2-2. Brayden McNabbregained the Golden Knights’ lead with his third goal of the season.

However, seconds later, the Red Wings tied the game 3-3. With under three minutes remaining, Marchessault added his second and third goals to lead the Golden Knights to a late 5-3 victory. Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill stopped 23 shots on the night.

He wasn’t much of a passer. It’s a good thing (Ivan Barbashev), and I were looking for him,” said Vegas forward Jack Eichel, who had three assists. “It was great to see him get a hatty and get rewarded. You know, ‘Marchy,’ he’s been awesome for us all year.

As a coach. I liked the way we won. Forecheck was good. We were getting inside for chances. We were creating offense by going to the net,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Playing the right way, getting the win, and playing through a little adversity. You know, you’re checking a lot of boxes that we haven’t checked in a while.

The Golden Knights are on the road to take on the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday, March 12th, at 7:00 p.m. PST. Thanks for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
