The Golden Knights were looking to wrap up their four-game road trip with a win in Detroit against the Red Wings on Saturday night.

Golden Knights are looking for a strong second half of the season with the NHL All-Star break approaching. It was the same story last year for the Golden Knights.

VGK had injury issues and had just completed a 0-2-2 road trip leading to the NHL All-Star break. After a solid final two and a half months of the season, which led VGK to a Pacific Division championship, the Golden Knights went 16-6 in the playoffs to eventually win the Stanley Cup.

Fast forward to this year, the Golden Knights are going into the All-Star break as an under-the-radar team again. The Vancouver Canucks are the darlings of the Pacific Division. The Edmonton Oilers are on a 15-game winning streak heading into Saturday’s game. The Boston Bruins are having a strong regular season again, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are giving additional hope for Canada to win their first Stanley Cup since 1993.

In other words, VGK has some work to do, and it needed to start Saturday against the Red Wings.

The Red Wings opened the scoring 5:04 into the contest and doubled their lead two minutes later. Golden Knights goalie Logan Thompson struggled early on, and VGK needed to answer quickly.

The Golden Knights fought back and scored two consecutive goals in two minutes to tie the game 2-2. Ivan Barbashev and Paul Cotter recorded goals for VGK, evening the score.

Detroit took advantage of a late-period power play to take a 3-2 edge into the first intermission.

Both teams had several quality chances in the 2nd period to score, but neither found the back of the net. VGK goalie Logan Thompson kept the game tight with multiple goal-saving stops in the middle frame.

They get one, and we don’t on special teams,” VGK captain Mark Stone said. “Then we’re trying to push at the end, and they get a late one off a rush. We’re not generating anything on our power play. We have to get back to the drawing board there.

After 40 minutes, the Golden Knights trailed the Red Wings 3-2.

The Golden Knights outshot Detroit in the final 20 minutes but couldn’t come up with the equalizing goal. The Red Wings added to their lead in the third period to finish off the Golden Knights 5-2.

I liked our battle level and our compete level tonight,VGK Coach Bruce Cassidy said following the game. “We got down two early at the end of a long road trip and got ourselves back in the game by scoring gritty goals around the front of the net.

Good trip that we had a chance to make great tonight,” Stone said. “We get five out of eight, though. Pretty solid. You’re not going to win them all, but we would have liked to go home with a win tonight.

The Golden Knights are back home to host the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, February 6th, at 7:00 p.m. PST. Thanks for visiting for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
