The Golden Knights faced a tough task on Thursday night when they welcomed the New York Rangers into town. VGK also welcomed back former Golden Knights goaltender Jonathan Quick, who helped VGK to a Stanley Cup title last season.

The Golden Knights lineup is a moving target that is hard to hit. Michael Amadio joined the long list of injured players who would not be available Thursday night. Those players are Jack Eichel, Adin Hill, William Karlsson, Shea Theodore, Tobias Bjornfot, William Carrier, and Ben Hutton. Amadio has an upper-body injury, and it was unknown who would replace him against the Rangers. Grigori Denisenko or Jonas Rondbjerg are potential replacements.

Adin Hill participated in the morning skate on Thursday and could return as soon as Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Brendan Brisson made his NHL debut Monday against the Nashville Predators and looked to impact Thursday night’s game. Mark Stone had a hat trick Monday against the Predators. Jonathan Marchessault added an empty-net goal.

Could anyone besides the top line of Stone, Chandler Stephenson, and Pavel Dorofeyev contribute offensively?

Logan Thompson is having a nice run, giving up three or fewer goals in five of his last seven starts after giving up four or greater goals in four of his five previous starts.

The Golden Knights got off to a sizzling hot start to the game. At the 11:35 mark of the opening period, Jonathan Marchessault scored his 19th goal of the season, giving the Golden Knights a 1-0 advantage. A few minutes later, Ivan Barbashev was awarded a good goal after a lengthy review to determine if he kicked the puck into the net.

The goal by Barbashev ended his 10-game goal drought.

We kind of had a sloppy start, and he was unbelievable,Marchessault said. “He’s been playing really well the last couple of games, and it’s good he’s finding his game. He has a lot of consistency, makes big saves at the right time, and gives us a chance to win every night.”

Through the first 20 minutes of the game, the Golden Knights led 2-0.

The Golden Knights struck again with two goals, by Barbashev and Keegan Kolesar, in the final 2:01 of the second period to go up 4-0.

Barbashev extended the Golden Knights lead late in the middle frame on the power play. The winger tapped in his second of the night courtesy of Mark Stone’s pass in front of the Rangers net. Moments later, Kolesar tipped in the Golden Knights‘ fourth goal of the evening.

Usually, when you’re thinking of a 5-1 win, you’re not thinking of your goalie,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He did his job and more. After we got the first goal, the goal helps, but it’s also like, ‘Hey, Logan’s here to play tonight.‘”

The Golden Knights played it safe in the third period. The Rangers took advantage of their power play to score 40 seconds into the third period. Chris Kreider found Zibanejad, who had an open net in front of him. It was New York’s 14th game scoring with the man advantage in the past 19.

Howden answered with 1:28 left when he scored into an empty net as the Rangers were skating with a 6-on-4 advantage. VGK went on to score an empty-net goal and picked up their second win in a row with the 5-1 win.

The Golden Knights coach was impressed with his goalie’s performance early on.

I don’t know how often the goalie’s going to bail you out like he did in the first period,” Cassidy said.

Starting to feel like myself again. Since the Winter Classic game, I’ve felt good in the crease, and I’m just trying to keep that going,” Logan Thompson said.

The Golden Knights will remain home to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, January 20th, at 7:00 p.m. PST. Thanks for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
