Vegas Golden Knights (37-25-7)  | Seattle Kraken (28-28-12)

It was the Golden Knights vs Kraken on Thursday night at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights ended with a dramatic 3-1 win after Ben Howden’s late third-period goal to keep VGK’s playoff hopes alive.

On Thursday night, the Golden Knights took on the Seattle Kraken at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights played with fire all night. They dominated the Kraken for most of the game but were a hit post away from trailing 2-1 later in the third period before they claimed what should have been theirs.

Besides health, the most significant change from the Golden Knights Stanley Cup run to now is the more open style of play. The Golden Knights did not trade chances or give to get last season. They gave to get early Thursday night but tightened the screws throughout the game, eventually dominating. VGK blocked 23 shots and seemingly controlled Seattle for much of the third period, but they lived dangerously, not getting the second goal until near the end of regulation.

Brett Howden and Keegan Kolesar played the heroes. Howden beat Seattle defenseman Justin Schultz to the net, and Kolesear chipped in the rebound for the game-winner with only 1:20 remaining. Chandler Stephenson scored the empty netter for a 3-1 win at T-Mobile Arena.

Despite controlling the high-danger scoring chances and territory, the Golden Knights led Seattle only 1-0 after 40 minutes. Jack Eichel scored the first goal of the night for the Golden Knights, but from 11:46 of the first to 6:31 of the third period, it remained 1-0.

Eichel came out looking to make an impact. He had six shots in the first two periods and finished the evening with seven total. Eichel also had three scoring chances and won 73% of his faceoffs.

On the out-of-town scoreboard, the St. Louis Blues beat the Ottawa Senators to pull within two points of the Golden Knights’ suddenly tenuous playoff position.

In the third period, Seattle was on the power play. Jaden Schwartz deflected a point shot with 6:31 remaining in the game to tie the score at 1-1. Seattle started to press. Eeli Tolvanen loudly hit the post behind goalie Logan Thompson with about five minutes remaining. Despite a superior performance, the Golden Knights were a fraction from falling behind.

It looked like both sides would be heading to overtime to fight for an extra point. Enter Keegan Kolesar, who put the Golden Knights ahead with 1:20 left in regulation to make it a 2-1 game. The goal was Kolesar’s sixth of the season, and Brett Howden and Nic Roy picked up assists on the play.

Chandler Stephenson officially put the game away with his 15th goal of the season with 12 seconds remaining, a goal that was both an empty-net goal and a power-play goal simultaneously, which isn’t something you see all that often.

Logan Thompson made 21 saves on the evening and picked up his 50th win of his career.

The Golden Knights’ dramatic win keeps them four ahead of St. Louis with a game in hand and pulled the VGK within two points of the L.A. Kings for third place.

The Golden Knights are back home to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, March 23rd, at 7:03 p.m. Thanks for visiting for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
