FSM Recap: Golden Knights vs Hurricanes – Game 33 – 2023

Franchise Sports Media

Vegas Golden Knights (21-7-5)  |  Carolina Hurricanes (17-12-3)

It was the Golden Knights vs Hurricanes Tuesday night in Carolina. It was a game to forget for VGK as the Hurricanes came out and beat the skates off of the Golden Knights, who fell 6-3.

The Golden Knights returned to the win column with a 6-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators Sunday night, but the club may have suffered injuries to multiple goaltenders in the process.

Surprisingly, Adin Hill led the Golden Knights onto the ice for warmups before the game. Hill returned to practice earlier in the week but wasn’t expected to see game action until Vegas’ upcoming road trip.

But Hill only made it through the first 6:25 of the game after facing three shots.

“It’s unfortunate,” head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “It’s difficult for Adin. He’s put the work in, he’s worked hard.

As for the timeline surrounding Hill’s return, Cassidy explained that goalie coach Sean Burke wanted to see Hill make it through a few drills and fully recover the next day. Hillchecked those boxes” on Wednesday and had his first full practice on Thursday. The decision was left to Hill and the medical staff at this point.

“It’s their call, it’s not mine,Cassidy said. “They tell me if he’s either cleared or he’s not cleared.

Notwithstanding this potential setback, whether Hill re-aggravated his previous injury or tweaked something else, both Stone and Stephenson said that the team is in good hands with Logan Thompson, who stopped 20 of 22 shots Sunday in relief for his 10th win of the year.

However, there’s a chance Thompson could be out of commission as well.

Thompson, who had started six of the previous seven games, appeared to suffer a lower-body injury in the third period while making an awkward save. He was in obvious discomfort after the initial play and after subsequent stops, but he continued to gut it out.

Unfortunately for Golden Knights fans, Tuesday night’s game was a crap show. VGK kicked off their road trip with a 6-3 loss to Carolina.

All eyes were on Golden Knights goalie Thompson on the first couple of high-danger attempts for the Hurricanes. Thompson appeared to have no issues going post-to-post and got down quickly to make saves.

Andrei Svechnikov scored the game’s first goal on the Hurricanes’ power play. Svechnikov was able to use traffic in front of the Golden Knights’ net to cut Thompson’s reaction time just enough. Will Carrier answered just three minutes later. Brett Howden won an offensive zone faceoff, and Will Carrier won a board battle shortly after. Carrier got the puck to Howden, who found Brayden McNabb wide open just above the faceoff circles. McNabb’s shot hit traffic on the way in, and Carrier cleaned up the loose change.

The Golden Knights and Hurricanes were tied at 1-1 after one.

Golden Knights vs Hurricanes 2nd Period:

The second period was one of the worst periods of the year for the Golden Knights. Goals by Jordan Staal, Jasperi Kotkaniemi, and Michael Bunting left the Golden Knights with a 4-1 deficit to climb heading to the third period.

The Hurricanes had nothing but drivers, and the Golden Knights were the passengers as the game slowly got away from them.

The Golden Knights have a veteran group that has been able to come back from multiple goal deficits as of late.

A quick start to the third period would be necessary for the Golden Knights to get back in this one.

Nic Roy committed a high-sticking penalty four seconds into the third period, and Seth Jarvis scored just 10 seconds into the period to give the Hurricanes a 5-1 lead. So much for a quick start from the Golden Knights. For the first time this season, a goalie change was made for reasons other than injury, as Logan Thompson was yanked after giving up goal No. 6, an unassisted tally by Brady Skjei at 4:44 of the third period.

Late goals by Jack Eichel and Carrier made for a 6-3 final in favor of the Hurricanes.

An obvious question after this game is Thompson’s fatigue level. Thompson has appeared in 11 games dating back to Nov. 25. It was not a good game from a results perspective by Thompson, as no goalie will feel good about giving up six goals and getting pulled early.

At the end of the day, it’s not always about the other team, it’s about us,” Jonathan Marchessault said. “We didn’t execute, we didn’t support each other, we made our life a little more complicated, and tonight we needed a more simple game.

The Golden Knights will travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning on Thursday, December 21st, at 4:00 pm PST. Thanks for visiting FranchiseSportsMedia.com for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
