After winning the first two games of the month, the Vegas Golden Knights went 3-5-1 in their last nine games and were shut out three times in less than two weeks.

The Golden Knights were back on the road with a back-to-back in Alberta, starting that night against the Calgary Flames, who were in fifth place in the Pacific Division. The Golden Knights were looking for a more consistent effort and better overall results after going 2-3-1 over the previous six games.

Calgary was coming off a 3-1 loss to Colorado after defeating Dallas 7-4 the night before.

After finishing October on a 1-6-1 stretch with five straight losses to close out the month, Calgary’s play had improved in recent weeks. Calgary was 5-3-2 in its last ten games and 6-4-2 in November. The club was averaging 3.58 goals per month (compared to 2.11 in October).

Elias Lindholm leads the Flames in scoring with 15 points, while Andrew Mangiapane, Nazem Kadri, and Jonathan Huberdeau are tied for second with 13. Blake Coleman rounded out the top-5 and has a team-high six goals.

The Golden Knights were 12-6-0 all-time against Calgary and split the season series with the Flames last year (2-2-0).

Golden Knights vs Flames First Period:

It was the start of the Golden Knights vs Flames first period.

The Golden Knights played a perfect period to start the road trip. William Karlsson scored a power-play goal to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 and some confidence with just over six minutes remaining in the period. Both teams had a few high-danger chances, but the Golden Knights avoided bad turnovers and had decent puck management.

Golden Knights vs Flames 2nd Period:

The start of the Golden Knights vs Flames second period.

It was really the same story as the first period. The teams traded chances, with the Flames gaining late momentum. Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill was able to come up with a few big saves to keep the Golden Knights with the lead heading into the second intermission.

Nazim Kadri fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that Hill fought off. Unfortunately, he left a rebound in the high slot that Brayden McNabb failed to clear. A.J. Greer beat Keegan Kolesar to the loose puck and fired the rebound past Hill.

The game remained tied throughout the third period and went to the extra period.

The Golden Knights started the overtime period on the kill. Nic Roy was in the penalty box for tripping. The Golden Knights killed off the penalty but could not get the extra point. MacKenzie Weegar skated the puck from the Flames’ defensive zone all the way up the ice. The Golden Knights did a good job forcing Weegar to the outside; however, his wrist shot was able to beat Hill. This was a shot that Hill would like to have back.

Our lack of finish was certainly there again tonight,Cassidy said. “We had chances to extend the lead. … It’s another game where we’re in the game, playing well enough to win. If we finish some of those Grade-A’s, we’re not sitting here talking about a loss. It is what it is.
