The Golden Knights are coming off a week in which they earned all six of a possible points, all in regulation. So far, the Golden Knights have gone 5-2 in their seven home games in January as they head out on a four-game road trip.

The VGK’s next four road games happen in six days, just before the NHL All-Star break. All four of the games are back-to-back scenarios for the Golden Knights.

First up was the New Jersey Devils last night. The Devils came into the game 23-18-3 on the year and have 49 points on the season. The Devils were without Jack Hughes, who has 45 points in 32 games. Jesper Bratt leads the Devils with 47 points, and the Golden Knights will see a familiar foe, Timo Meier. Meier signed an extension worth over $70 million for eight seasons and has 17 points in 31 games.

There is a glimmer of hope for VGK fans. Like last season, the Golden Knights’ last four games before the NHL All-Star break are on the road. The Golden Knights went 0-2-2 on last season’s four-game road trip before the NHL All-Star break. That was part of a skid when the team went 1-5-2 before last season’s All-Star break.

But after Monday’s game, Vegas Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy did not hold back in his post-game press conference after the team’s 6-5 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.

It’s getting to the point of the season in which we should be better. We basically played a beer league game out there.” Cassidy on the team’s effort.

The plan as of this weekend was for Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill to return for Tuesday’s game against the New York Islanders. VGK Coach Cassidy had this to say about Hill’s possible return. “The plan is he’s here, and we want to play him tomorrow if he feels he’s ready to go. He (Hill) will make that call.

The Golden Knights and Devils threw haymakers nearly the entire game. In the first period, the teams combined for three goals. Pavel Dorofeyev made quick work on offense, scoring his seventh of the season 6:12 into the game. New Jersey evened it up nine minutes later as Nico Hischier scored with helpers from Timo Meier and Jesper Bratt. Curtis Lazar potted a goal from the slot to gain the 2-1 lead for the Devils with 22 seconds left in the opening frame.

The Devils scored their third unanswered goal at the 1:37 mark of the middle frame. On the first shot of the second period, the Devils posted the 3-1 tally when the former Golden Knight, Tyler Toffoli, found the back of the net.

Six minutes later, the Golden Knights Jonathan Marchessault got Vegas within one goal, scoring his 21st goal of the season.

On the following shift, Marchessault evened the score at three a piece. Chandler Stephenson and Nic Roy joined the Golden Knights offensive party, scoring Vegas’ third and fourth straight goal of the period. The Devils answered back again, scoring with 0:16 left in the period to make it a 5-4 Golden Knights lead.

Midway through the final period New Jersey evened the score five after poking in a loose rebound around the Golden Knights’ net. The game needed overtime to decide a winner. Former Golden Knight Tyler Toffoli finished off his former team with his sixth career hat trick by scoring just 2:35 into overtime as the New Jersey Devils rallied for a wild 6-5 victory over the Golden Knights.

How will coach Cassidy prepare the team for Tuesday’s game against the New York Islanders? That’s on me to get the message across, and I did a shit job on that tonight, that’s for sure.”

The concern is that Cassidy has less than 24 hours to get the message across, and the team will not have a pre-game skate the morning of the game. The Golden Knights will have tired legs as they take on a motivated New York Islanders team that just got a new coach in NHL Hall of Famer Patrick Roy.

The Golden Knights continue their road trip against the New York Islanders on Tuesday, January 24th, at 4:30 p.m. PST. Thanks for visiting for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
