The Vegas Golden Knights took on the Washington Capitals Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights looked to duplicate their complete 60-minute effort in Thursday’s 4-1 win in Vancouver.

The statement victory was the second game in a row in which Vegas scored four goals after being held to three total goals in their previous four.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak (0-2-1), and it was a team-wide effort from the first puck drop. All four lines were clicking, particularly the top line with Jack Eichel, Ivan Barbashev, and Mark Stone.

After playing eight of the last nine games on the road, the Golden Knights will play six of the next eight at home, where they’ve gone 8-2-1.

The Capitals are coming off back-to-back wins against the Kings and Ducks after falling 2-1 to San Jose early last week. Washington is 7-2-1 in its last ten games, and five of its last six contests have been one-goal games.

Much like the Golden Knights, the Capitals entered Saturday’s game with momentum.

Washington defeated Anaheim 5-4 thanks to Tom Wilson’s first career hat trick. Significantly, the Capitals finally snapped their drought on the power play, which had lasted for 12 games.

This was the second and final meeting between Vegas and Washington this season.

Golden Knights vs Capitals First Period:

It was the start of the Golden Knights vs Capitals first period.

Tom Wilson took the game’s first penalty, which should surprise no one. VGK’s Jack Eichel found Jonathan Marchessault with a nice pass from the right circle to just inside the blue line. Marchessault took the puck between the circles and beat Darcy Kuemper on the right side.

The Golden Knights outshot the Capitals 10-5, but the period seemed closer than the shot differential. The Capitals had their fair share of high-danger chances.

Eichel logged his fifth point in two games on a breakaway goal off a blown coverage by the Capitals’ defense. Ben Hutton made an excellent heads-up-play to send the puck up ice. Eichel caught the pass and knew exactly what to do with it.

The Golden Knights took a 2-0 advantage to the second intermission with a 28-9 shots on goal advantage.

Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy said that the intermission discussion ahead of that third period is when things changed. Cassidy said other teams were using the defending Stanley Cup champions as a measuring stick, but the Golden Knights needed to get back to their game.

I think the key word for us is ‘defending,’” Cassidy said. “We’re defending until someone takes it from us, but this year, everyone feels they’re good enough to win, too. So, let’s get back to the moment and be that team. Enjoy being the defending champs, but let’s keep working on being the repeating champs. And I think there was just a little bit of a mindset shift on that for us in Edmonton when we talked about that, and I think you’re seeing now the result of that.

Eichel continued to have the hot hand. Golden Knights captain Mark Stone scored off a hell of a pass from Eichel, who carried the puck behind the net and made a no-look, backhand pass to Stone waiting beside the net.

Wilson scored a late goal with the extra attacker, but Marchessault put the game away with an empty net goal to secure the victory.

I think there’s been a lot of really good things that we’ve done as a group,Eichel said. “I think we’re defending well; it’s leading to offense. We’ve created plays out of our O-zone cycle. Obviously, we’ve always been a good rush team; it’s something that we pride ourselves on. And special teams has been better. Of course, the last two games, we’ve liked our game.”
