The Golden Knights were in Boston to take on the Boston Bruins Thursday night. It was also a step in the right direction, as the Golden Knights previously lost five of their last six games.

But it wasn’t the homecoming Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy wanted. After VGK got the win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, they were right back in the red against Cassidy’s former team, the Boston Bruins. A pair of comebacks were not enough as the Golden Knights never got the lead.

Boston center Morgan Geekie notched his first career hat trick, but rookie Mason Lohrei netted the game-winner with less than five minutes remaining. It was a power-play goal, and Boston beat the Golden Knights, 5-4, at TD Garden Arena Thursday.

Last year there was the unknown,” Cassidy said. “I didn’t know what would happen coming back in here after getting let go. You don’t know if you’re going to get a nice hand or get booed out of the building. Anyway, we got that over with.

The Golden Knights fought off the Boston Bruins for the better part of the opening period, but the scoring picked up with five minutes remaining. The Bruins scored three quick goals in a span of three minutes to take a 3-0 lead.

We didn’t win very many races or battles for pucks in the first period, so we changed our forecheck a little,” Cassidy said. “Decided to get a little more aggressive all over the ice to see if we could get back in the game. Our guys have a lot of pride, and it showed. We got better, and it got us back in the game.”

I thought it would be close, but not 5-4,Cassidy said following the game.

Paul Cotter got the Golden Knights moving in the right direction. Cotter swatted the puck out of mid-air from the right circle past Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman at 1:57 of the second period.

A few minutes later, Golden Knights defenseman Alex Pietrangelo pulled the Golden Knights to within 3-2. Jonathan Marchessault got behind the Boston defense. but Swayman made the initial save. Pietrangelo got not one, not two, but three whacks at the rebound, eventually hitting twine.

However, Morgan Geekie finished the hat trick to give Boston another two-goal lead.

Michael Amadio and Chandler Stephenson helped the Golden Knights rally with a late second-period, and early third-period goal, respectively.

The game turned when Sheldon Rempal tripped Jesper Boqvist and the Bruins broke the tie. The Golden Knights had their own late third-period power play but failed to convert.

Golden Knights goalie Adin Hill stopped 27 of 32 shots. Swayman grabbed 32 of 36. Pietrangelo and Bruins’ forward Brad Marchand led all players with five shots on goal.

The Golden Knights stay on the road to take on the Buffalo Sabers on Saturday, March 2nd, at 4:00 p.m. PST. Thanks for visiting for your Las Vegas Sports news today.
