The Vegas Golden Knights looked to extend their winning streak to three games as they faced off against the St. Louis Blues Monday night at T-Mobile Arena. It was the first game of a home-and-home series, which will wrap up on Wednesday night at Enterprise Center.

The Golden Knights have recorded back-to-back 4-1 wins, and they enter tonight’s contest with a chance to win three games in a row for the first time in a month.

It seems like the Golden Knights are officially out of their scoring drought, having scored ten goals in the last seven periods of play. On the negative side, Alec Martinez is on injured reserve. Shea Theodore is on long-term injured reserve. Adin Hill remains out, and Jiri Patera will be the backup goaltender for Logan Thompson.

St. Louis is fifth in the Central Division with 25 points in 23 games and is coming off a 4-1 loss to the Arizona Coyotes. A slow start and falling into a 3-0 hole ultimately proved too much for St. Louis to overcome, though the Blues played well in the second and third periods, outshooting the Coyotes 29-13.

This will be the first meeting between these teams this year (they will wrap up the season series on March 25th at Enterprise Center). Historically, this matchup has seen a lot of wild games (often 5-4 or high-scoring games) that have featured exciting lead and momentum shifts. The Blues have scored at least three goals in six straight games against the Golden Knights.

Vegas is 13-9-1 in the all-time matchup and went 2-1-0 in last year’s season series.

Golden Knights vs Blues First Period:

It was the start of the Golden Knights vs Blues first period.

It was an exciting first five minutes of the game, which featured three breakaways, two by the Golden Knights. Neither team was able to score, and this game had early high-action energy.

The Golden Knights had fewer than seven high-danger chances in the first period. But Alexey Toropchenko scored the period’s only goal with under thirty seconds remaining. Colton Parayko took a shot from the point that Toropchenko tipped.

The second period brought more breakaways for the Golden Knights and prime scoring chances for both teams. All that was missing were some goals. Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson and the Blues’ Jordan Binnington had A LOT to do with that.

Binnington turned away the period’s best chance from Jack Eichel. Eichel was alone on a mini-breakaway. Binnington executed an excellent poke check to prevent Eichel from getting a shot.

I liked a lot of our game,” Jack Eichel said after the game. “I give their goalie credit.”

Jack Eichel scored what turned out to be the only Golden Knights goal on the powerplay with 7:02 remaining in the third period.

William Karlson won the offensive zone faceoff and worked the puck around the horn. Eichel received a pass from Alex Pietrangelo and sniped the puck over Binnington’s right shoulder to tie the game.

This was a fun game, not the type of excitement you would expect from a 1-1 game heading into overtime.

It would have been fun to see the teams trade chances for five more minutes; instead, the Blues ended the game just 38 seconds into overtime. Eichel started to break up ice from the defensive zone, anticipating a turnover. Robert Thomas found a wide-open Pavel Buchnevich, who beat Thompson on the short side to give the Blues the extra point.

All in all, a pretty good game. Good enough to win.Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy on Vegas’ effort. “The gameplan was pretty good on what we generated and what we gave up.”

We had a lot of good looks, some Grade As that he made stops on. I thought we defended pretty well and didn’t give up a lot,Cassidy said. “All in all, pretty good game. Well enough to win for sure. We’ve seen a bit of this movie the last month with some goaltenders playing real well against us where we didn’t get points. So at least we got a point in this one.
