Raiders vs Titans – (Las Vegas, NV). Raider Nation, you can breathe a little easier. After a brutal 4-game losing streak all but doomed the Las Vegas Raiders’ chances at making this year’s playoffs, Maxx Crosby and the defense took center stage, mauling a Tennessee Titans squad that ranks near the bottom of the league in every major offensive category. Sacking Cam Ward six times, the Raiders rolled to a 20-10 victory, snapping their 4-game skid and improving their record to 2-4.

Since his record-breaking debut, Geno Smith has provided a mixed bag for the Raiders. Despite throwing his league-leading 10th interception in this game, he looked more comfortable in the offense, utilizing short throws and getting away from pressure instead of making consistent mistakes. Finishing with his second-lowest yardage total of the season (174 passing yards), he added a touchdown and largely kept the ball away from the Titans with several long drives.

Ashton Jeanty continued to be the engine that keeps the offense moving. After two straight games with 100+ yards from scrimmage, he wouldn’t reach the same lofty heights in this game, but Jeanty still made the most of his opportunities. With 86 yards from scrimmage (75 rushing, 11 receiving) and a rushing touchdown, he was the only Las Vegas player with positive rushing yards and helped the Raiders dominate time of possession all game.

The Titans received the opening kickoff, with the Raiders’ defense forcing a quick 3-and-out punt.

Backed up to their own 20-yard line, Geno Smith and the offense went to work, with Smith finding Michael Mayer for a short gain. Ashton Jeanty took four-straight carries, picking up 19 yards and getting Las Vegas over midfield. Smith and Tre Tucker then connected on back-to-back throws totaling 20 yards, but the drive stalled outside of the red zone. After a delay-of-game penalty made the field goal attempt longer, Daniel Carlson nailed the 50-yarder for a 3-0 lead.

Cam Ward found Calvin Ridley for an 18-yard gain at the beginning of Tennessee’s second drive, but Jonah Laulu would sack Ward a few plays later, killing their momentum before the Titans punted it away at the start of the second quarter.

Both teams traded punts on their next drives, as the Raiders would struggle to move the ball. On their second drive of the quarter, an illegal contact penalty would give them a first down, but they would stall once again, punting it away to the Titans and pinning them deep in their own territory.

After two short plays, Ward would be brought down by Devin White, who also stripped him of the football. Tyree Wilson grabbed the loose ball, giving the Raiders an instant red zone possession. After Jeanty was stuffed at the goal line, Smith found Mayer for a touchdown, putting Las Vegas up 10-0.

Again, the Titans and Raiders would go 3-and-out on their next drives, swapping punts once again. With under two minutes to go, Tyjae Spears would pick up 21 yards on a pair of carries, giving Tennessee’s offense a little bit of life. Ward found Van Jefferson for a 20-yard catch-and-run to put the Titans into Raider territory for the first time, but Devin White would make another huge play for the defense, intercepting a pass and keeping the shutout alive.

Geno Smith would then kneel out the clock, sending the game into the half with a 10-0 Raider lead.

Receiving the second-half kickoff, Geno Smith quickly found Ashton Jeanty for a short gain before he ran the ball into Titan territory a few plays later. Stalled at Tennessee’s 46-yard line, Smith and Mayer connected for a fourth-down conversion, keeping the drive alive. After Jeanty carried them into the red zone, Jeanty would force his way into the end zone, giving the Raiders a 17-0 lead.

Tony Pollard gashed the Raiders’ defense for 17 yards on the Titans’ first play of the second half. Ward then dropped a dime to Van Jefferson for 23 yards, putting Tennessee deep in Las Vegas territory. An offside penalty on Maxx Crosby moved them into the red zone, but the defense stood tall, forcing a short field goal attempt to shrink the lead to 17-3.

With limited time on the clock, Smith and Mayer found each other once again for 22 yards before Meyers brought the team over midfield before the final quarter began.

After a short carry by Jeanty, Meyers would snag a 16-yard pass from Smith to bring the offense to the edge of the red zone. Smith’s turnover issues would then rear their ugly head, throwing his 10th interception of the season into the hands of Cody Barton, extending his league-leading total.

Luckily for the Raiders, their defense continued their stellar day by forcing yet another 3-and-out punt. After a few Jeanty carries, Smith redeemed himself with a huge pass to Tre Tucker to put the Raiders back in the red zone. The offense wouldn’t be able to punch it in for a touchdown, resulting in another Carlson field goal for a 20-3 lead.

Down three scores, Cam Ward found Elic Ayomanor three times early in the drive, with Ayomanor securing 27 yards in total and moving the Titans to the brink of the red zone. After a defensive pass interference call on fourth down brought them to the 1-yard line, Ward zipped a pass into David Martin-Robinson, who secured his first NFL touchdown and sliced the lead to 20-10.

After Las Vegas went 3-and-out and punted it back to the Titans, the Raiders’ defense made one final stand, forcing another fumble and allowing Geno Smith to kneel out the clock on a 20-10 victory.

Raiders vs Titans – What We Learned

What a performance by the Raiders’ defense. While the Titans’ offense is one of the worst in the league, this game is a nice rebound for a unit that has struggled mightily this season, especially in last week’s blowout loss. Devin White, who saw increased snaps after Germaine Pratt was released earlier in the week, turned in his best performance as a Raider, forcing a fumble on a strip-sack, grabbing an interception, and leading the team with 9 total tackles (5 solo, 4 assists).

Maxx Crosby turned in another stellar performance for the Silver and Black, securing a pair of sacks to go along with a pair of tackles for loss. Leki Fotu and Jonah Laulu also grabbed sacks for the Raiders, securing a dominant performance by the defensive front. Holding Tennessee scoreless in the first half, the defense stuffed the run early and often, something they have struggled to do all season. If this defense shows up for the rest of the season, Las Vegas may be able to start stacking wins.

Offensively, Geno Smith reached 10 interceptions on the year, making this his fifth season with double-digit interceptions. While he still largely kept the ball out of harm’s way, he is on pace for around 30 interceptions on the year, a scary sight for a team looking to claw its way back into the playoff picture. If he can start finding the endzone more consistently and keep the ball out of the defense’s hands, Ashton Jeanty should find even more room to run.

Speaking of, Jeanty has continued to be the main weapon on offense. With Brock Bowers out with a knee injury and Geno struggling to consistently find Jakobi Meyers and Tre Tucker, Jeanty has led Las Vegas’ resurgent running game and given the offense some much-needed energy. Another touchdown brings his season total to six, one behind Smith’s total passing touchdowns. With an increased workload, Jeanty has emerged as a star for a Raiders team in desperate need of an offensive identity.

Next week, the Raiders face, arguably, their biggest test of the season, as they take a trip to Kansas City for a divisional game against the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes and company have struggled a bit this season, currently holding a 3-3 record and looking disjointed on offense for much of the season. Their defense poses another tough task, especially in the secondary and along the defensive line. However, opponents have shown that they can easily score on the defense, as teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars have shown. If the momentum from this week’s win carries over into that matchup, the Raiders can pull off another upset victory, vaulting them above the Chiefs in the AFC West standings, and send themselves into their bye week with a winning streak in tow.

The Raiders travel to Arrowhead Stadium for a matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, October 19th, at 10:00 AM. Come back to  FranchiseSportsMedia.com/raiders for all of your Las Vegas Raiders news.
