The Mountain West Conference released the 2022 football schedule on Wednesday and UNLV has a chance to get off to a fast start.

Opening up the 2022 season at home at Allegiant Stadium against the Idaho State Bengals, the Rebels look to avoid a repeat of last year, when they lost to Eastern Washington. But the Bengals are not a top-ranked team in the FCS, or the Big Sky Conference, unlike the Eagles, who finished the season ranked 7th overall. So on paper, UNLV should win this game.

Week 2, the Rebels will travel to Berkley, California, to take on Cal. The Golden Bears are coming off a 5-7 season but gave head coach Justin Wilcox a contract extension after Oregon was reportedly interested in hiring him. Cal went to the transfer portal to get help, adding former Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer, ex-Utah defensive end Xavier Carlton, and former Washington linebacker Jackson Sirmon. On paper, this is a game UNLV has a shot at winning.

The Rebels return home to Allegiant Stadium for Week 3 and take on the North Texas Mean Green. This game will be challenging. The Mean Green are coming off a 6-7 overall record but were 5-3 in Conference USA. North Texas has three players who have opted to return for an extra collegiate season next fall. Linebackers Sean-Thomas Faulkner and KD Davis, plus offensive lineman Manase Mose. a First Team All-Conference USA selection in 2021, Davis will be crucial returners for the Mean Green.

In Week 4, UNLV will travel to Logan, Utah, to open Mountain West Conference play against Utah State. In what should be a highly entertaining game, the Rebels will look to avenge last year’s loss in Las Vegas to the Aggies. Then, fans saw a 100-yard kick-off return for a touchdown, UNLV All-Time leading rusher Chuck Williams run for 221 yards, and a controversial ending. On the other hand, the Aggies will have a new quarterback and won’t have the same weapons on offense. So this game could go either way.

The Rebels are again back home in Week 5 when they take on the New Mexico Lobos. UNLV got head coach Marcus Arroyo his first win as a head coach last season against the Lobos, and on paper, they should do the same this year. However, new Mexico has question marks at the quarterback position, and they lack explosive playmakers on offense. Adjustments were critical last time around for UNLV when they played New Mexico, but this is a game that they should win at home in front of the Rebellion.

UNLV travels to San Jose to take on the Spartans in Week 6. While the Spartans didn’t reclaim their Mountain West Conference title in 2021, they did come to Allegiant Stadium and beat UNLV 27-20, in another heartbreaking loss for the Rebels. While San Jose State did use the transfer portal to add to their roster, the Rebels will know how to match up well against those new faces. The Spartans added former Hawai’i quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and former UNR wide receivers Elijah Cooks and Justin Lockhart. This will be another game that is too close to call on paper.

In Week 7, the Air Force Falcons fly into Allegiant Stadium. In the Rebels final game of 2021, the Falcons ran the ball through, over, by, and around UNLV in a 48-14 blowout. The Falcons run a double-wing offense, and playing in the high altitude of Colorado Springs, Colorado, didn’t help, not to mention it seemed some of the payers, who are no longer Rebels, mailed it in. This will be a tough game because of the offense Air Force runs, but if UNLV can get off to a fast start, “steal” 3 or 4 possessions” and turn them into points, they have a shot at beating Air Force. This is another swing game and too close to call.

The Rebels final non-conference game is taking place in Week 8, and it is a big one. UNLV travels to South Bend, Indiana, to take on Notre Dame. Unfortunately, the Rebels aren’t as deep as Notre Dame, and this is the first game that, on paper, should be a definite loss. Let’s not sugarcoat it. It’s the Fighting Irish, with all kinds of 5-star recruits, and in one of the most iconic college football venues. But if we know one thing about the Rebels under Marcus Arroyo, they won’t back down and will fight their tails off.

The Rebels have their bye during Week 9.

Week 10 UNLV will be back on the road, this time heading south to San Diego State State to take on the Aztecs. This game is interesting since SDSU has question marks heading into the season. Who will be their quarterback? They lost one of the best specialists, Matt Araiza, who played a massive role in the Aztecs‘ win against UNLV last season by flipping field position and pinning the Rebels back. And even with Araiza’s colossal game, UNLV had a chance to win the game but fell short 28-20. The Rebels had a legitimate shot to travel down to San Diego and beat the Aztecs.

UNLV returns home Week 11 and welcomes Fresno State to Allegiant Stadium. Once again, on paper, this looks like a loss for the Rebels, with the Bulldogs returning much of their offense, minus NFL-bound running back Ronnie Rivers. Also, Fresno State welcomes back Jeff Tedford as head coach and former UNLV defensive coordinator Tim Skipper, the associate head coach and linebackers coach. Coach Tedford and coach Arroyo are friends and coached together in the past, so they are familiar with what the other likes to do. Last year UNLV hung tight at Bulldog Stadium but fell short 38-30, and this should be another challenging game that could go either way.

The Rebels hit the road for the final time in 2022 when they travel to Hawai’i to take on the Rainbow Warriors. Last season UNLV beat Hawai’i for the Golden Pineapple at Allegiant Stadium 27-13. Since then, Hawai’i has had a ton of turnover, including their head coach resigning and losing nearly 20 players to the transfer portal. But the Rainbow Warriors hired former quarterback Timmy Chang as their new head coach. He has welcomed former Hawai’i players back, including former Bishop Gorman defensive coordinator Chris Brown, as coaches. The Rebels are a more talented team and have more stability on paper. This should be a game UNLV wins and retains the Golden Pineapple.

The final Rebels home game is the Battle for the Fremont Cannon. UNLV welcomes a new look UNR to Allegiant Stadium to finish their 2022 regular season. This may be the first time UNLV will be favored to beat the Wolfpack in several years. A mass exodus of players and coaches (mainly to Colorado State) left the Wolfpack thin. But they used the transfer portal to add pieces to their team in hopes of not having to go through a rebuild.

UNLV will be out for blood after a blowout loss last year in Reno that saw a UNR player headbutt UNLV’s Brennon Scott, causing him to need stitches. On top of that, Scott was penalized while the conference didn’t punish the UNR player. The Rebels will have a good shot at winning this game.
